I have designed a website that I will be selling advertising on as well as on a magazine that I will be publishing. The advertiser will get an ad on both the magazine and on the website. Once my first market is finished, I'll move on to other ones in my state, and then eventually other states.

I have this Senior Care website that I've developed for my home state of Illinois. I have designed everything on this website. Every pixel. I will be working on this project fulltime

What I will be doing is making cold calls to develop leads. My goal is at least 200 calls a day. My system will work this way: I first make a call > then I send an e-mail > then I do a follow-up call > I send out the hard copy of the publication > and then I follow up and close.

What I will be doing is posting daily results of my calls made, leads developed, and ultimately sales made. Hopefully, I won't be the only person on this thread, but if I am it'll still be worth it to me. If this first project goes well, then I can scale it up from there, that's where the real money is going to be, month-in-month-out.

At the end of the case study I will post my profits on the project and I will put up the link to the finished magazine.

BTW, I have no interest in selling a wso, in fact I've never even bought one. The reason I'm doing this is to hold myself accountable.

Right now, I am a one-man band, I do everything. As you'll see, this project is heavy on:
    web design
    telemarketing
    desktop publishing
    graphic design

Some of you may not be skilled in all of these areas, but hopefully there will value to learn from for some. If anybody wants to interact with me on this, I will be available only during the evening to post about it.

Good for you man! I look forward to keeping up with your thread, Hope you make your goal. By the way, what are you charging for advertising?

From one Illinoisan to another, GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks gmil88 . I appreciate the good wishes.

Here's the ad rates I'm charging...

    Fellow Dawg

I had a client in STL that does this same model with used car dealers. It's a family business that started in Chicago and now they have a few different offices.

I met the guy when I was the Internet Sales Manager at Auffenburg in O'Fallon.

I'll put you touch with him and I'm sure he can give you a breakdown of the model.

I know in the STL office that they averaged $35K a week in ad sales but the magazine was super expensive to print so he was wanting to focus more of the online side.

Anyway get ahold of me and I'll see if I can put you two together.

That was back in 08... good gig... no, but great money, learned more about selling in the first month than my previous 3 sales jobs put together, but the hours were a nightmare.

        I'll give you call today.

Money might take until after Christmas to start flowing. Lots of good leads, but not sure what a possible conversion rate will be. Still too early.

If you could find a way of tracking the calls on a daily basis, it'll increase your confidence in the long term.

Because when the sales come in, you'll be able to look back at what it took to get them and scale it up.

        Maybe you could track:

        Number of dials
Number of talk to's (with decision makers)
Number of agreed meetings (or whatever your ideal outcome is)

Agreed. Even an excel doc where you, for example, just hit the "arrow button" to increase number of dials by 1 would do the trick just fine.

I agree with Chris. Keep track of the success rate of your calls. To keep it fun you can even try one script/approach for the first week, then try another for a few days. If you know how many times you made a call with each approach & how many people responded to each, the ratio will tell you which worked better. If you do 500 calls with each your results should be pretty valid. Not only will you learn, your curiosity to see which one worked better will keep it more interesting to you along the way.

Once you have the result of the first test, form a theory about why one method worked better than the other. Then try a 3rd method that capitalizes more on your theory.

Basically, this is a split test for cold calling

To add to what everyone else is saying about tracking your calls.

You need to track your calls to make sure you are dialing as many numbers as you think you are.

On more than once occasion I have spent 3-4 hours dialing and it might feel like I have made hundreds of calls...when in reality I'm at maybe 50-60.

In my experience you can work miracles in 90 days. Sooner than that happens occassionally, but that's long enough to make most project fly

Great site, great project! I have extensive experience in the niche you are focusing on. I wrote a set of training manuals "How to start an Assisted Living Home" These manuals have been used in over 300 homes from Calgary to Cancun. I would be happy to provide any insights you might want/need just send me a PM.

I also respect the fact that you have set up an accountability program for yourself. I believe that is without a doubt the fastest way to success.

      Am I missing something here?

Firstly, let me say I admire you for aspiring to this goal and sincerely hope you reach it. It's a very nice looking website and the links and resources will be no doubt of use for seniors.

That being said, I'm very curious about how you're approaching potential advertisers about buying space on your website when it is new and totally unranked.? A great looking website with no ranking is the proverbial "billboard in the desert", where advertisers will get little or no clicks.

I can't comment on the magazine side of the equation, because I know very little about that, but having done a fair amount of SEO and online marketing, something is not adding up for me here.

The business model that I'm familiar with (say, for creating an authority site) is 1) building the site, 2) getting it highly ranked for KW's with a respectable amount of searches in that niche, and 3) approaching clients about doing some advertising AFTER the site is at or near the top of the SERP's so they have a valuable resource to advertise on.

Ratcheting this thing up to $10,000/month is a pretty lofty goal. I'd just like to hear more detail on how you intend to accomplish this from the online perspective .

Thanks for the good words about the site.

To be clear about it, what I'm selling here is the magazine ad. The website ad will be thrown in at no extra expense. Right now I'm using the website to direct people to to view my sales page regarding advertising in the publication. Over time, I hope to get some pages to rank decently for some keywords I'm targeting. Obviously, that will take some time to get the necessary backlinks and to age the site enough the grow the SEO. When that happens I might split things up to offer online vs. offline advertising rates, or something like that. Until then, all the value will be in the printed piece.

That sounds like a solid strategy. Business owners I pitch websites/mobile to are still big fans of magazine ads (which are not cheap), and they have no problem shelling out $700.00-$1,000.00 for a full color ad in a local magazine, I think the classic "media mix" to advertise a business is still the way to go, but with more emphasis towards internet marketing and mobile going into the future. I'll be watching your case study as well. Senior care is clearly a lucrative niche. Best of luck with your project.

Lesson for us all, when you gotta post in a forum full of strangers in order
to make yourself accountable, you really arent ready to do it.

Have you already given up? or is it more like havent REALLY gotten started yet?

Im rooting for you, just calling it like I see it though

Thanks for the note, I really appreciate the interest. I haven't given up!... I just need to be more diligent about posting my updates here. I've never been a big forum poster, but I do want this thread to offer value.

Last week was just OK for my cold calling efforts. I got side tracked by a couple of issues late in the week and didn't get enough calls made. Buckling down on the cold calls is my biggest challenge, I'm not going to lie, but that wasn't the issue last week. I've got about 10 days to work it hard before people start taking off for Christmas.

So far I've got to say that these senior care marketing people I'm calling on have been very friendly, which is nice. The feedback has been very positive. I just need to work much bigger numbers with the phone. Based on the ways are going I might close some ad deals before Christmas, but the real likelihood is the week after based on what I'm hearing so far.

I just found this thread, it's a great commitment you made but I think you've made too many cold calls per day as a goal and that pressure is a psychological disadvantage. What about setting a goal of 25 cold calls per day and then scale it up after you've accomplished that for 3 days? From my own experience, if the goal is too big it becomes an obstacle instead of a facilitator. Just a thought.

    Saluki,

Instead of focusing on # of dials, set yourself an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon to make calls. When these hours come up, that's what you are doing.

You aren't buggering off to have a coffee.

You aren't playing around on the internet.

    You aren't coding your site.

An hour at a time, twice a day. You can do that.

Most people aren't going to be available to take your call. Get high probability times to call the DM back, calendar, and call back then.

Track with an excel spreadsheet. Company name, contact name, phone #, next contact date, and notes are all the columns you need. Conditional format the next contact date column so that today's calls to be made are highlighted. Real simple. Record all your actions and results in the notes column.

Now you know where you're at.

I have many videos about calling in posts here on the forum; just search for them.

Yes, I'm tracking everything now. I'm making 200 dials a day during the hours of 9am-4pm.

I've decided to push back the publication date to the end of January. I underestimated the number of contacts it would take...It's a learning process. So far I'm really encouraged by the response to the project. Once the holidays are over things will definitely accelerate. Candidly, the timing for it wasn't great for starting a brand new project, but the upside is I'll hit the ground running with a lot of momentum after New Years.

      All the best.
Yeah basically I'm just scraping them off of yp.com.

    It IS a good-looking website.

    Now.

    About your process.

I first make a call > then I send an e-mail > then I do a follow-up call > I send out the hard copy of the publication > and then I follow up and close.

    You'll waste money this way.

Do NOT send out the hard copy of the publication to unqualified prospects, especially those you have not spoken with.

"Send me some literature" is the easiest prospect put-off of all time. And a big money waster for you.

Sending unsolicited communication almost always results in it being thrown into the trash.

Concentrate on having conversations with prospects, uncovering their reality, and finding out if they agree that you can help them.

I agree. What I'm doing is basically I try to close people on the ad after just the email. Some people have bought without having the physical magazine in their hands. However, most say 'My boss wants to see a copy of the piece before we commit.'... or something to that effect. Then I mail it out and do more follow up. I'm closing about 1 out of every 3 of those. (which I'll do all day long.)
