UK Warriors - Cold Calling Help Needed!

There are threads on this forum that say it is illegal to cold call in the UK, is this actually true?

I want to give cold calling a try as I am unable to actually visit businesses due to current circumstances, but are worried by the idea it is illegal to do so. Last thing I want is to get into trouble before I even get going!

So any UK warriors out there that are using cold calling can you confirm it is okay to do so and as an extra, are you having success? Or have I got to move to the US to get my offline business up and running

Please try not to use this thread as a way to debate the pros and cons of cold calling, I understand that not everyone thinks it is the way to go, and I value your opinion, but if we could just keep it on topic.

No it isn't. Cold calling TPS is though, but that is unlikely to apply to you in B2B.

  • Hi Suzanne,

Here's the stumbling block if you're cold calling in the UK.

    TPS

As you can see corporate companies can also use it.

Although many UK based organisations just take the risk and use telemarketing to businesses.

If you would prefer not to - and don't want to live in a faraway land or get a boat and sail 12 miles offshore using a satellite phone...

You could send sales letters or to save on costs (and they can be more effective) postcards.

The good news is - there is always a way to reach your target audience.

One of the hardest things I cam across in a few niche businesses I have used Cold Calling in such as Pharmaceuticals and Care Homes is that the "important" person you need to speak to is never around or does not provide any time for you.

I must admit I had 1 business owner make a comment about "your not going to keep calling are you?" but apart from that the entire process of over 4,000 businesses in 1 niche seemed completely fine.

How you approach them in a call is another matter, but take into consideration what companies/people you want to call and if so, be professional but natural. As you are also a female, I think you have the upper hand than a guy on the phone too, but that's just my own judgement.

If your success rate with the calls are not going well, then I would consider sending them a physical letter in an envelope with a business card and trying that, or do that first then follow up with a call.

Hope everything works out well for you

      I know Jim

I was being general in that the majority of businesses aren't registered. She should check first.

Thanks warriors! So as I understand it, as long as I check they are not on the TPS list, then I should be okay.

Glad to hear that it is possible. I like the idea of sending a letter, as they are probably more likely to read that than an email. Would probably need a copywriter to create a letter for me though, as I would have no idea what to put.

Perhaps if I can make a few sales over the phone, I can invest the money into this.

Unless anyone can recommend a WSO that has this already done for mobile websites.

Have a look at Steves username above.

He is English, a copywriter with a penchant for flyers and postcards (amongst other things) and frequents this forum so knows what it is you are trying to sell (mobile websites from another thread of yours)

No harm asking for a ballpark figure is there? Sort of as a future goal.

          I would avoid any WSO.
