By building a small, but strong, core offering and charging what you would consider on the higher end of the pricing fold, you will be amazed that 'cheap' doesn't always mean more sales....I found this out early on and decided never to sell myself for cheap purely out of desperation.

Being a marketing consultant is extremely rewarding, and I've found that I gained more respect from clients when I started charging more, and didn't negotiate on my pricing. Set the tone for what you want to be paid, piece together a small, core offering of services that you believe that the average busy small business owner will gain value from, and become the best person you can be at offering those services - don't be afriad to outsource to the fine folks in the 'Warriors For Hire' section - it's a quick way to get yourself established with high quality services, and you can then focus on the 'front end' - introducing your business and its benefits and explaining how you can help. Ultimately, business owners want to know that you care, and wont just run off with their cash after a quick transaction.

If you are stuck for an actual strategy to do all this, there is a guy called John Spangler, who started a thread called "Jobless Dad revisited" in the Offline section here, who has proven that his Interview Method is evergreen - 4 years later, he's still doing it and has obviously gained tremendous respect from local business owners. His method shows a very simple but effective way to get your foot in the door without a hard sale, but provides incredible value which ultimately educates the customer, leading to a sale.

Best of luck mate, it's an exciting time to be doing this
