Easiest Niche To Target for Cold Calling

If you're having a hard time getting in touch with decision makers and making headway with your calls and need a boost. Pull out your smart phone and look for appliance repair companies. Most of them are 1 man operations who you can help with a redesign, mobile site, reputation management, etc.

I did this while baking a pizza and had an appointment set for a redesign and SEO on my 2nd call.

Nice tip. Didn't think of them specifically. Tried calling the handyman niche but I wasn't very handy turning any of them into clients.

It seems the businesses that are easiest to target are the ones where the business owner is most likely to answer the phone vs. a gatekeeper. Of course "target" meaning that you are able to speak with a decision maker.

Great tip. Agree with 123xyz, the easiest to target are those who do not have gatekeepers. Getting through them can be a challenge.

"Hi...I'm not sure who I should speak with...maybe you can help me. I'm looking for the person who's in charge of bringing more customers to you."

(Stop and wait. Don't say a thing until after they do.)

      >>"Sure, that's Bob. He's out right now, though."

(Half of the people you call won't be in. Appliance repair people, just like all tradespeople, aren't making money if they're sitting around the office.)

"I understand. He wouldn't be making money if he was at the office, right? Well, hmm. You probably know his schedule best...if you were trying to reach him, what time would you call?"

      >>"Oh I guess around four-thirty...he usually is in for a half-hour at the end of the day. Or right at eight-thirty before heading out in the morning."

"Great. I'll write that down. ...Say. My name's ________. You won't be working at either of those times, will you?"

      >>"Sure!"

"Oh you will! Will you remember my name? Will you put my call through when I call back?"

      >>"No problem."

(Now the up front contract is set up.)

      OR MAYBE:

      >>>"What's this about?"

"Well, as I said, I work with business owners or managers who's job it is to bring more customers in the door. But I don't know exactly who would have that under their umbrella there..." (trail off).

And then continue with the rest, above.

BUT WHAT IF THE GATEKEEPER CONTINUES WITH:

      >>>>"You're going to have to tell me a little more" or something similar?

"Sure, I understand. I have a toolbox of solutions for helping people attract more customers and get the phone ringing. Frankly, I don't know which will work for your business, because I don't know your business just yet. I have to have a quick conversation with the owner or manager in charge of bringing more customers in. But I don't know exactly who is in charge of that over there..." (trail off. Continue as above.)

Gatekeepers are only as difficult as you make them out to be. It's in your head, and if you keep at it, one day the adversarial setup will vanish. Take the tension out of your voice. You're doing them a favor: if they don't speak with you, it's no problem for you. It's a loss for them. You have plenty of other people to be helping.

Insurance is pretty good as these guys often leave their cell numbers on their voicemail.

Word to the wise, try to call the "one man" type businesses early or later in the day...not in the middle of the day when they are on a roof, delivering or repairing something, cleaning a floor etc. They won't like you too much.
