Put a skirt on and make $1,000,000?

One word that always sends a chill up my spine is when someone says to me
'that is not professional'. Professional is a perception and one that is not universally
correct.

What if I told you of window cleaners (male) that started wearing kilts and now
may have one of the fastest growing franchises in the industry, ever. I was on a
forum where other cleaning business owners laughed at the idea... they are not
laughing anymore. (although still criticizing it)

Not only are they growing like gangbusters, they are one of the most EXPENSIVE
services out there. Don't limit yourself by false thinking. Roll the dice every now and
then. You never know

UPDATE: Here is some media on this company. Good stuff!

    LMAO.

This is awesome, thank you for sharing. And... you're right. It's easy to get caught up in those things. I'm guilty of it. Just goes to show you that innovation comes in many different forms. I love it.

You're confusing "being professional" with having a marketing hook. They're very different things.

In fact, from looking at their website, they appear to have a well run -- and very professional -- business. For cryin' out loud, their slogan is even "Professional Service With A Smile"!

However, when you combine professional service WITH a great marketing hook, you're likely to have a big advantage over the majority of your competitors.

These guys will probably do very well... UNTIL some "window washing GIRLS in skirts" start a business.

I'm not confusing a thing, their competition (and many other types
of business owners) said they are 'not professional and will fail'.

You and I know it is a 'hook', but the reason some entrepreneurs try
or not try something is based on their perception of 'professional'.

OK, then their competitors are confused -- and, perhaps, even doomed. Because these guys are clearly very professional (as well as being shrewd marketers).

I apologize. Apparently, I misunderstood your intent when you said, "professional is a perception." Because, in my view, "being professional" is a concrete concept that's easy to spot.

Years ago, I once went to Chippendale's, what a blast that was! Reversing roles and monetizing it equals a recipe for success. I have this ONE idea that I never really researched enough but I think it would absolutely be a killer. Combining Hooters with my idea would actually blow it through the roof (and no, I am not sharing), lol. Bottom line: think outside of the box,

I'm not sure how many watched the video on the article I linked to.

The founder started off with little money and went DOOR TO DOOR.

Anyone here resonate with that? It starts off hard but it can lead to
great things. As many of the pro sellers on here tell us all the time

My only question was "what in the world does Ireland and kilts have to do with window washing?" Especially if they're franchising across North America now.

But then I thought, "what the hell does an australian talking gecko have to do with car insurance"? And my mind gave up at that point. As far as branding goes, its different, and it sticks out. We live in a deeply multicultural nation (in America). If this was done 20 years ago, people may have responsed differently.

I can't see it as being unprofessional, not these days. But I'm sure I would have still found a reason to oppose the idea. We live in an age of skepticism. Along with that comes criticism. And to a certain extent it can be bad, but to another extent it creates gaps for creative minded people to fill.

My larger view of things is that its just a hook or gimmick for branding. Fair enough. The more important aspect is the value they deliver underneath the kilts (no pun intended). Geico infected my mind with visions of talking lizards, but what kept me using gieco was their service. So as long as this company can provide a valuable service to their specific niche, they'll probably do great.

It almost seems in this day and age, that a strong cultural component can take you far in terms of branding. It helps add more dimension to something that would normally come off shallow. Not to mention its funny. And funny means automatic likability and rapport. So good for them.

They're based out of Canada. Kilts in Ireland or Scotland would
likely not stand out at all, now would it?

You know this had to be a drunken idea or something along those lines. It's hard to think that someone completely sober would be sitting there going, "ok.. so here's my business plan; I want to dress men up in kilts and have them wash windows."

I think that's a fantastic idea. Anything you can do to get people talking, and more importantly remember you. Especially in an industry with so much competition. There's 100's of services right here in the Twin Cities. So anything you can do to stand out from the competition is golden.

    Great find!

We have one client that's in a super-competitive business. We didn't do anything quite that outlandish (kilts) but we did send a mailer that nobody in their niche would dare to do, and we did it in a way that made it look much more risky than it actually was.

Our client got calls from his competitors chiding him for his unprofessional approach and almost pulled the campaign. His clients didn't think so - his company has been voted by his client base as the #1 provider in his niche for the past two years.

Kudos to those guys for stepping out....hopefully they have the legs to pull it off!!

Great story. It reminds me of the tale about Walt Disney. When asked what the key to making money was, he replied: "Look around and see what everyone else is doing, then don't do it!"

Every creative and (somehow) unique idea is considered to be "Crazy" at the beginning. But, when it work well, people are stop laughing and start to be mad at themselves because they didn't do that on time, which means - first!

My advice - whenever you have time, go on Fiverr and search for "unordinary" gigs. I found great gigs in Fiverr Gigs Directories you would never connect with marketing...but actually there are a ton of gigs which can be twisted for internet marketing purpose. Do it and you will be unique. Don't just rely on top rating gigs, take a look around.
