I have a couple of questions about SEO for local businesses

1. A business provides multiple services in a metropolitan area. Is unique content for each service needed for every city or can the city name just be changed?

2. When setting up web 2.0 properties for backlinking, should different web 2.0 properties be used for each keyword?

Thanks in advance
Gregg

When you are having a website, it is required to have to have unique content on each page.

Web 2.0 always accept unique content and these websites help to derive traffic for your website. So post unique content on every web 2.0 site where your account does exist. You can add your keywords in post and link them to your website.

Have only one well-written page per service offered and do not put the location in the url or title since you want those pages to be for every city. There's no need to create multiple pages per city, but you can definitely create location-specific pages that have unique content about that area. Make sure each one links to the "service pages." you can even geo-tag each location page. On a main website, this works a lot better than having 10 pages talking about service X but only changing the location.

Now... You CAN do those pages on another domain and try and rank those as feeder pages... just don't brand them to the main business, it will confuse Google. The best way is to use a different c-class ip and drive the traffic via a citation and simple url link or an image ad / banner ad.

      Hey Kung Fu,

Thanks for your response. I am just learning the lay of the land for SEO as it is now. I have been guilty of over optimizing and it cost me a lot of high rankings.

My plan was to build a location specific page for each service and the site I was using as an example lost all of its page one rankings. I have already built and published several service pages specific to the main city in the metro area. It is a wordpress site. I am wondering if I can continue building service pages like this and put a list of the other cities served in the footer? I checked and there are a couple of page one rankings for secondary cites in the metro area, so maybe that will be enough.

Regarding the web 2.0 sites, should I use different sites to point to different pages? Or can I use the same web 2.0 sites to point to mulitple service pages?

I am getting good results but I am being careful so I don't blow it.

I co-own several companies, and I'm in charge of the SEO/SEM/PPC..

One of our companies uses sites with thousands of pages offering the same service, but to different cities in different states. Each page is optimized to include the keyword in the description, title, and on page.

Our solution to stay on googd terms with Google was to make sure we include the city name, city specific content (such as weather or local news feed) and spun content on each page. We actually had software developed that would generate these pages on the fly. They hold up very well post panada and all of them get indexed.

As far as link building, diversify your link building. Don't just use web 2.0 links, use social networks, bookmarks, forums, articles, etc. Then build links to the links you built to the money site. We like to call it artificial chaos.

We go over a lot of local stuff with our WSO, link is in my siggy.
