Local Keyword Searches, Am I Doing this right?

Hey guys and gals,

Quick Question I think I understand enough about using google keyword tool and how it works, yet I have been trying to target some local companies and I keep getting very "HIGH" competition rates, and very low search volumes... am I Missing something? I thought ranking locally was suppose to be somewhat of an easier task?

Can Someone please help me understand if I am doing something wrong or what?

Thanks!

    It is easier.
    Imagine ranking for plumber
Now imagine ranking for Denver plumber

Sure, in most niches there will be some decent competition.
So you just have to do a little more work.

Oh and a word of advice, the Google Keyword Tool isn't always right.

I too agree with vndndrgj and scottgallagher. The Google Keyword tool isn't always accurate.

Are you doing keyword research for PPC?

p.s Sipboy3000 I am not really going after PPC.. I am trying to simply find keywords that I can rank page one for with backlinking etc..

You actually want med and high competition, low comp means not many are buying ads for this keyword. If you go to google and type a kw in and see no ads that's not a good kw, no one is buying ads, so it most likely is not profitable. The competition I look at is on page 1 or the top 10, you can use free Traffic Travis sw and see BL's, PR, H1, title etc. for kw and look to see if can you beat them. It will tell you if it is easy or hard to beat. Good Luck

I have never cared about competition part in selecting local keywords. I go behind high volume search. Local keywords are so easy to rank that you don't need to worry about competition

As per my opinion,we should use and target local keywords by including the region along with it. Some keywords might have low competition which will be indexed quickly and it will be beneficial in long run.
I do believe that google keyword tool is not accurate all the time. Need to search for more accurate keyword tool.
