Is referring leads to a website a good idea?

I've got a business that allows businesses to create their own website through a website builder software. I don't do any building, they do it all themselves.

Is it the best idea to cold call and then just direct them to the site?

The worries I have with this include them not following through and actually doing this or them forgetting about it.

Thoughts on how I can get around this?

    Hi there,

Have you evaluated the demand for such a service? Godaddy and several others provide for website builders as part of your domain registration. What's so great about yours above any of those, (essentially free ones)?

    All the best,

    Sasha.

I guess making calls is bad...if you don't know what you're doing.

Anyway...we try not to bash different prospecting methods around here. We try to help others use them all to their best advantage.

Hey Jason, sorry if my post appeared to be bashing cold calling, it's just certainly NOT for me. And i have no intention to learn how to do it.
In my opinion there are better ways to prospecting...namely a 1st class letter.

I spend what spare time I have for learning/study, on writings from the great's namely, Gary Halbert, Jay Abraham & Dan Kennedy.
Its from these guys that I learned how to craft a persuasive letter that I send out to carefully researched potential prospects.

I follow up with a warm call - I'm now at the stage whereby I'm closing on average 50% of the follow up calls.

          Hope this helps Volux ...

It's the same as with any other web designers: what makes them different?

I'm cold calling businesses that have no idea what to do when it comes to having a website. What I offer is actually a lot more than the free version of webs, wix, etc.

EDIT: I'm not asking if my business idea is good, I'm already started with it. I'm wondering about referring them to the site or perhaps doing it another way?

If you are worried about the amount of prospects that will either never go to the site, forget, and/or not following through with the entire process...Then you have to decide where you want to spend more time, effort and maybe money.

You can do it upfront by adding some walk through services to the funnel to help them start down the path with the system to get them started and paying. If they pay for the service but do not finish their website, that is not on your head but at least you have a sale.

You can do it during the process, where you give away for free or charge to help them set up the website or at least take them so far in the process.

Or you can to it after the process and track everyone that you called that was interested, then call them back a month or so later if you see they never did anything with the website builder service. This way you are bringing it to the front of their minds again if they forgot, can answer questions if they are having trouble etc etc

Also, do you have any kind of tracking system in place to see who you called compared to who has signed up for the service to build their website? This would be important to track conversions, test calling scripts etc.

It sounds like your business model is to call a prospect, pitch this service and let them go on their way "hoping" they sign up. Do you make a commission on every sign up or do you get the money directly because you own the service?

If this is a commission based system, it all depends on how much the commissions are and how much extra money/effort do you want to use up of those commissions to ensure more sales.

If it is your own business, then I would think that adding more value to the cold call funnel process would make sense since it directly effects your bottom line.

well I personally don't think it is that good of an idea.

There is just too much possibility for them to drop off like you said and you lose the sale.

A one call close or a cold call with a follow up meeting would probably be better options for you.

With a one call close or in person meeting it is easier to ask questions and fine tune your presentation to their responses selling your sites depending upon what they tell you a site can do for them, or a what problems they believe a site can solve for them.

Also, it is easier to build up the value of your services, elicit desire, create urgency, etc.

If you just direct them to a website, it's harder to personalize that site each particular business owner, and what ends up happening is you will have a generic website targeting the most common needs.

This does work especially when you have good copy, just look at all the IM sites out there.

But I think your conversions will be higher with one call closes or meetings in person.

I don't think is a good idea while the niche you reach which the person do not have a website and mostly might not be the one always online.
I might think that email marketing or face to face might be even better.
