What's a good Wordpress theme for creating starter websites?

I've seen nice looking themes available as WSO's but the problem I have is that there's no guarantee the author is going to update the theme or fix bugs and stuff.

I bought a squeeze page theme one time that had all these 'insane' reviews and it looked really amazing, only to find out that it was a piece of junk that was buggy as hell. I can only assume that the same thing can happen when you pick up themes as WSO's.

I could be wrong but that's my take on it.

I couldn't agree with this more.

Your best bet is to use a theme from ThemeForest or WooThemes. Those are my two favorite places.

ThemeForest - User created themes that have to pass several tests before being allowed to be sold on the website. You know they are bug-free if they are there. Especially the ones that have over 5,000 sales.

WooThemes - It's a company. If they have buggy themes, they get poor reviews. Poor reviews leads to no money.

Agreed. If Udesign ever goes responsive, which is supposed to happen soon, it will be hands down the "best" theme on the market. I've put together over 2 dozen sites using it. Fantastic, highly customizable theme.

Have you checked Soren's theme (in my link a few posts above)? It's fully responsive and only limited by your imagination.

That is ok. I find it too plain for offline businesses. It is more of a marketers blog

It's spendy but really nice. Far better than a WSO theme which may not be supported in 6 months. As for price. I guess I like to get what I pay for. Judging by the ratings it's a damn good investment. And the cost does not effect me as I will not be paying. Sounds like they are working on the responsive aspect.

That said, I'm still open to options

A couple of days ago Expand2Web launched their brand new updated theme called "SmallBiz Dynamic".

It takes what I considered to be the best WordPress theme for B & M businesses to a whole new level.

SmallBiz Dynamic has 8 widgets built in which means 8 fewer plugins that you have to install.

Also. it has drag and drop capability, whih means that you can pretty much now build any type of site you need (unlike the previous versions of this theme).

It is also fully responsive without the need for other plugins.

Well worth looking at - but it's not cheap

but IMHO is clearly the best of the best.

The SEO functionality is also the best I have ever seen and theme support is excellent as well.

Is this the theme at smallbiztheme dot com? I don't see anywhere on it that says dynamic. That's why I ask. I also cannot find the dynamic theme anywhere in google if it's not the same one as on smallbiztheme dot com. Where can I find this amazing theme you speak so highly of?

I looked at the smallbiz theme and think it's got great potential, however after a bit of research a few are reporting wordpress upgrade compatibility problems.

This could be a real pain if you have to keep checking whether or not the current version of the theme you are using is going to work with the latest wordpress release.

  When I first started to build my own wordpress site with free theme, it was a really plain as I had no coding experience previously. I spent hours digging into the wordpress code to make very small changes , like logo, background image, foot text. And this is the reason I switched to premium themes.
  
  I highly recommend Magictheme when someone needs to quickly build a fancy corporate website with WordPress. Nearly, all of the modifications can be done in dashboard settings, there are also a dozen of shortcodes/template pages available. This is a great for newbies who do'not have experience with wordpress.
  
  My advice:
  If you have some coding skills or love to learn, free themes are good candidates to start. I built several blogs site with WordPress › Twenty Twelve « Free WordPress Themes
  
  If you don't want to your hands get dirty, then premium theme is a nice option to start with, huge-time saving. Woothemes and Themeforest are great place for commercial themes.

PlanetStarta Home - PlanetStarta is a good one, I use them since 2011 when it was released as Website Weaver here on the forum. pretty solid choice with a WYSIWYG editor wich makes it easy to create templates and sites. These themes: Volumes are built using this framework.

The support from Kezz and Daz is outstanding and that was very important to me as an absolute newbie.

Minimalistic themes are generally good for starters as well as themes that aren't feature-rich.
Here's an example (free): Blogum Free WordPress Theme

There are tons out there.

Themeforest, WooThemes and ElegantThemes are probably the most popular sites. I see a lot of design agencies use ones from ElegantThemes. Perhaps because they have access to a lot of different themes from one payment. Maybe you'll find that useful as well.

Alternatively, you can also contact me to get a customize theme that can fit any of your customer's website for a dirt cheap price.

I went through this same issue when I first started and let me give you the lessons learned. Many are going to disagree with me but realize I am not a programmer. I know enough HTML to get by but PHP is something I am still not comfortable with.

Be careful with any of the frameworks. I have one client that is on Thesis and anytime I try and do something, since I do not know webhooks half the stuff breaks. You spend all this time learning wordpress and then thesis breaks the way it works. I know some people LOVE thesis, I am not one of them. Because of this I have avoided studio press, genesis and others. I do have Catalyst but I have not played with it yet.

Find one or two more you can use over and over. Theme Forest has a couple of responsive themes that work really well. For example the two I use quite a bit are InFocus and PureVision. Great business themes and very contemporary. That being said, don't be afraid to use themes targeted to specific businesses or industries.

Decide when responsive is the best route, or to use a plugin to create a mobile version. I do both and sometimes WPTouch is better than a responsive theme.

I'm all about backing the "little guy."

Usually these 1-man operations don't have any kind of marketing budget and rely (and appreciate) referrals.

I can tell you, with 100% confidence, that Soren has personally answered my support requests/concerns within a 4-6 hour window via his forum or by email. Try getting that kind of support from the big guys.

Also, Soren has been very quick to listen to his customers; since purchasing his theme he's released an update about every-other day (based on his clients recommendations). Of course, some people like to buy from those big theme stores then, if support is needed, wait 24 hours for a response that's usually copy-n-pasted -or- search through their forums (where customers actually become the products' tech support). :rolleyes:

Yes, I will speak highly of this young man's work, he has a solid product.

Congratulations to him on what sounds like a great theme and support. I took a look at it, and it wasn't for me, but I'm sure he is doing very well with it.

I wouldn't mention it again, but as I said before that I was very happy with uDesign and the issue of support has come up, you'll be hard pressed to find better. Take a peek at the support forum they have. There is no such thing as a "support ticket". There is only a forum - where you post up any (even fairly detailed theme customization questions) issues, and generally receive multiple responses in minutes, or hours. I can't really imagine it being much better, short of having a direct line where the owner picks up immediately.

Here's a 2 minute video explaining the very advanced SEO features of the SmallBiz theme.

IMHO, this is what makes it stand out from all the other premium offline themes out there.

Theme attractiveness / responsive layout etc. is important, but cutting-edge SEO must surely be the most important factor in deciding what theme to deploy for a client....

Hey Mark,

I would also like to add , the small biz theme has been supported for quite a few years, and will continue to be supported, unlike most WSO's.. Wordpress
is continually updated, and it is quite easy for a theme to break following an update.

I also like the headway theme for flexibility, though this is not as easy to use 'out of the box' and there is a bit of a learning curve.

Good point!

Yes, the fact that the theme has been fully supported by Don Campbell and his team at Expand2Web since around 2009 is of huge importance.

Cheaper themes can break when updated to WP version 3.5.1.

At the end of the day, the SmallBiz Theme is probably the most expensive theme in the marketplace for Offliners.

But...I think we owe our paying clients the best, and this theme foots the bill.

Also, SB theme is probably the easiest theme I have ever used

and the quickest to set everything up - by a long shot!

Just to let you know that the smallbiz theme is not immune from wp updates, and i have just found out that i now have to download a newer version of the theme(i use 3.8) because it won't work with wp 3.5. This is a real pain when you have a lot of sites running on this theme.

I just think you ought to chill, market less and speak a little more unbiased here and tell the actual truth. I'm pretty sure this is not either the first or only theme for small businesses, which they say on their official page.. actually it's not.

I am not an affiliate for the SB Theme, nor have any commercial connections. I am just a very satisfied customer

and want other Warriors to benefit from it as well. (I've been helped a lot on the WF, and want to return the favor!)

Some Warriors respond to a post saying such and such theme is great without explaining in detail what makes it so good!!

The SB theme is not for every offliner! Firstly, it is probably the most expensive offline theme out there, and secondly IMHO there are better looking themes for specific niches.

However, it scores very high in the SEO department.

If other themes (for example: your one) can have comparable SEO benefits using additional plugins etc. then great,

I want to hear about them!

Maybe I should start a thread on the SEO benefits of WordPress for offliners, and how to tweak it to improve it even more !

If anyone finds another WP offline theme which in their opinion has better SEO functionality - then please let me know .... I will be extremely interested.

Mark it's obvious you have some sort of interest in promoting the theme, which of course if fine... but they already do a pretty good job marketing it themselves... enough said.

Please refrain from commenting on what XXX theme can that mine can't. I will not go in-depth and comment much on these so called "unique features no other theme currenetly has" lol, but lets just say that most of these highlighted things can be written in a few lines of code, and you make it sound much cooler and sensational than it in reality is. Honestly.

Again that's marketing, and that's totally fine, but I'd appreciate you at least try my theme before commenting what it can't accomplish.

There is nothing unique about meta title, description and keywords, google maps, and google authorship.. I'm not even mentioning that in my sales pitch as i recall, since it's pretty standard today. 8 widgets is not the same as 8 plugins.. again.. nuff said... I could go on, but it would be pointless since I have no interest in giving smallbiz theme negative comments.

I just think you ought to chill, market less and speak a little more unbiased here and tell the actual truth. I'm pretty sure this is not either the first or only theme for small businesses, which they say on their official page.. actually it's not.

I use StudioPress for most of my local business websites. They have a good selection of mobile responsive themes. The Genesis Framework is really well coded and has a fantastic built-in SEO configuration options.

The designs are decent and convert. I've converted tons of local consumers to paying clients for myself when I ran an offline business and now for my local biz clients.

It's already been mentioned a couple of times already but Planet Starta is great. The support from Kez is fantastic. If you are not a programmer this is the way to build some very nice sites and the learning curve is very short.

If you are budget conscious there is a LOT you can do with the current default theme on WP and it is responsive. I have worked with WOO themes, but I'm not a coder and I found them to be less than user friendly. Another option is to purchase the profits theme or the optimize press theme. They may be more than you need for a typical brick and mortar but you get multiple licenses with them and they are a snap to set up squeeze pages.

You mentioned an "affordable option". I would agree with Brenda on this. The default WordPress theme is great if you have limited cash. Being that it is responsive, the websites you build will be able to cater to all the mobile traffic that is on the increase as well. When starting out "Free" is simply hard to beat. I would suggest you customize it and try to "personalize" it a bit...make it your own. Take it up a level from "default". Nice background, modify the color scheme, things like that...

I went through this a few years ago. Best way to do this is just to invest in "club subscription", these are offered by most of the major theme developers. Check out Shape 5 (all themes, $249 I believe), WooThemes ($299), Elegant Themes ($249). They're expensive, but you get a developer license for life for all their themes, 50-100+ themes. Its a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of themes for years.

I have to add one more thing. If you're serious about internet marketing, you're going to use these themes all the time. It gives you a strong base. Just my $.02:/

A cool theme I found when I first started using wordpress was one called 'Graphene'.
Couldn't see it mentioned but I've used it for quite a few sites in the past.

StudioPress is great! I use the Genesis Framework for myself and all for of my clients. Their child themes rock and roll and easy to scale up. I've used themes from themeforest BUT some themes have crappy support. Research what people are saying about theme owner and how they manage the support questions. I usually read the comments to get better insight. What I love about Studiopress is their support. If I have questions, they get answered!
