Import/Export successes?

Just wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone has had any recent success in the business of import and export.

I'm looking to get into liquidation brokering. I'm waiting on a new guide that's coming on that topic.

But also like the idea of lining up a good overseas supplier and trying out ebay.

My only issue with that is how do you find a supplier that isn't already selling on ebay? To me ebay just reaks of saturation and suppliers competing against their resellers.

Thoughts?

Four years ago I came up with an idea to sell various products (all the same niche) on eBay and niche specific forums. eBay said I wasn't allowed to sell the product on there. The niche specific forums said they didn't like my domain name so I wasn't allowed to be an authorized seller on their forums.

I went with Adwords. I was killing it. Within 6 months I was generating five figures a month (my initial startup investment was literally $1500 for products and getting everything setup). Then Adwords told me they didn't want to allow my products. I still used them for a while longer by using ad variations and spending $500 per day (on some days) until they told me to either cut the shit or I was going to be banned completely.

Then I moved onto posting on CL posting at least 100 ads per day nationwide. I was maintaining more or less the same revenue. Then CL started dropping in terms of revenue and my poster was ripping me off by reusing old posts as if they were new.

Then I went into alternative ad programs MSN, Yahoo, third tier PPC sites. My gross went down, but my net stayed about the same since I was spending less on advertising.

Now I've moved away from all forms of paid advertising. My gross went down again, but my net stayed almost the same. I do minor SEO every once in a while.

The point of that is don't worry about eBay, there are more sources for customers than just one place. It's nice getting eBay's traffic but if you can't you can adapt it to other market places as long as the product and price is right.

You don't even need products that are sold on eBay. I have a new product idea that I'm currently talking to manufacturers about. This new product isn't really new but it's not really sold on eBay and the one's sold on eBay aren't sold in the form I want to sell it in.

I've found tons of products that are available from the manufacturers that aren't sold on eBay at all and eBay might not even be the proper marketplace for them. In the future I hope to expand into them.

There are also a lot of variants of similar products that you can sell. Remember you can get just about anything branded with your company name or logo (a lot of times for free), then give it a different name from what the generic versions are and many times charge a premium for your name brand, even though it's the same thing as the "generic".

Thx for the great post! Any Insight you can offer on how to begin looking for manufactured stuff that's is not currently selling on ebay?

Any particular type of products you like to go for OR stay away from?

By the way if you're dealing in liquidations you can most likely beat everyone's eBay price so I don't see that as being something to hold you back.

You might be better off looking in this section of the Fourm.

You can find a few threads about what you are trying to do. Look up the thread about ebay by ABE and another thread by AlkSense. These guys will help you.

Not really. The only reason I found any of the products was because they were related to something that interested me. I landed on pretty much everything from my interests and from reading news articles.

As far as go for or stay away from I can't really say to much on this because technically all I sell is products in one niche. Everything else I'm thinking about doing in the future.

I can tell you to always buy or ask for samples. You'll find the same product from different manufacturers can vary widely in quality. Also especially with electronics check the quality first. I've bought MP3 players and touch screen devices thinking I would make a killing and when the samples came in they were pretty much unresponsive or hard to make work.
