What's working for Google Places/Plus Local these days?

I've a couple of clients who are asking for this service. Is it still basically just about building a proper places/plus page with maxed out images, good description, linking to their domain, etc, and then just getting as many citations as possible?

Also, what are you guys charging for this service?

Thanks,

Nick

Citations and reviews are important, i don't do GP anymore because of all the changes every 2/3 months, but when i did i charged about €299- per month, for that i arranged that legit reviews where post on sites like Yelp and such, maintaining the citations and keep their page updated.

      I hear you.

We also used to do quite a bit of it because we knew we could get results using all whitehat methods. We charged thousands and $500/month to maintain. But then Google changed everything so often, we never found anything that was really effective anymore or anyone who could provide results for us so we stopped.

All these same principles still apply, except that we've seen that we've had to do a bit more traditional SEO link building to get the same results we were getting 12 months ago without it.

    • 90% of the current local algo is based on ORGANIC ranking factors. So you can build citations and optimize Place page and they still won't rank unless site is well optimized for local too.

Plus there is a HUGE update underway. I just helped Google announce it this week. You can get the details on home page of my blog, but tons of stuff is changing.

So before diving in be sure the read the guidelines, all the help docs and all about this update. NOT usually a good idea to edit during major updates and things can get buggy.

          Thanks Colm!

Yes I work directly with upper management at Google Local. I'm under NDA with Google, do beta testing for new products like the new dashboard update that just came out.

Google gave me a demo account of the new dashboard before it was made pulic for testing and also so I could take screenshots and work on the big announcement so it would be ready once they lifted the media embargo.

And also Google Top Contributors act as sort of a focus group, providing and advice about proposed changes, alerting Google to bugs and other problems we see in the field or at the Google forum when we are helping all their users.
