This method can be used / done in two separate ways. You can either use it as a means to generate leads for your service business clients - or you can use it as a way to purely profit by tying together 3 groups for a win-win-win scenario.

You can either reach 30,000 people for free for your lead generation client and get paid per lead, or, you can make $1,250 in a simple, easy, and quick to put together deal.

Most stores print receipts on a set size of thermal paper. Ever notice that most of the receipts you will get are the same width? Some are different, but they are invariably the same width. The back of these receipts can be printed on. You also notice how the receipts repeat at a certain point? That's because the someone was smart enough to determine the average size of a receipt - which is 7 inches. This is how much space it takes to print everything you see on the front based on their average ticket (especially restaurants).

Then you go out and talk to restaurant owners and similar business types where people with some disposable income shop, and who also do not have the need to print a refund policy on the back of their receipt. Restaurants for instance spend about $1,500 on thermal rolls each year, so you are putting $1,500 back in their pocket and all they have to do is wait for a shipment. As long as you target businesses who have no use for the back of the receipt - you're good to go.

You go out and sell half of that real estate 3.5 inches of that real estate leaving yourself with the other half. The average business card is 3.5 x 2 inches, so, you will end up with about 3.5 x 3 inches worth of real estate. Plenty of space to create a short and compelling message. You target businesses types (in high earning areas) who want to get their message out to as many people as possible - as cheaply as possible (Real Estate Agents, Insurance Agents, Lawyers) all come to mind. They will ultimately be paying to get their message out to as many potential buyers for as cheaply as possible. Your pitch should be relatively simple; "If you could reach 30,000 people for .05 each, how profitable do you think that will be for you?" No where on earth can you be guaranteed to reach the palms of peoples' hands for .05 each.

Next you create the copy for your offers and place your order for receipts. Warning: they do take up two two weeks for delivery.

There are 2, 070, 000 inches of total receipt space in the smallest order that can be delivered. That equates to roughly 30,000 printed receipts, which means that whoever signs up with you will have reached 30,000 eyeballs for .05 cents an eyeball. Those numbers may raise the eyeballs of your RE Agents, Lawyers, and Insurance agents.

Use this method to make money, where you get a RE Agent and Lawyer on the back of a receipt where each has paid you $1,500 (approx cost of 2 million inches worth of receipts) for a net $1,500 profit for you. Or you can use it as a way to generate leads for your local lead generation client. Depending on the town you are in, it can also be used to sell certain IM products.

  • I would have to know the ROI ahead of time before selling it.

Kinda a chicken and an egg thing... but I won't sell anything to anyone that isn't of tremendous value. Yeah, the may be getting on 30k possible reciepts, but that doesn't mean anything.

I have never saved a reciept because of some offer on the back.
I have never used some offer on the back of the reciept.

I would like to here from those who have.

    • Great points... I've amended this according to this ROI thing. Most businesses can print anything they want on the front of their receipts. Just buy roughly 19,000 receipts worth of paper, and in exchange for free paper, they print your message on the FRONT of the receipt. This whole thing just cost you $50, or $0.003 per receipt.

How much would you pay blindly to put anything on the FRONT of 19,000 receipts? More than $50? Less than $50?
  • Interesting idea.

Although, I have never gotten a receipt from one company that was promoting another company on the back of their receipts.

But what I have seen is companies having information on the back of their receipts to direct their customers to their own websites and/or to opt-in for their own newsletters, and offering incentives for the customer to do so.

I have also seen companies that have information on the back asking you to go to their website and fill out a survey and when you fill out that survey you get a confirmation code, and then you are supposed to bring that confirmation code back to the restaurant or store, and get a deal on another product.

And I have done both of those things myself, setting up a message on the receipt to get people to optin for a newsletter or email list (VIP program) and getting them to fill out surveys, but I have actually never thought about promoting another company on a receipt.

I would also be curious about the ROI on that.

  • I tried this about 2 years ago.
Promoted a text to get local coupons campaign.
Seemingly a perfect match, even though people in this
area were not used to these type text campaigns.

Over 2000 receipts were distributed per day through WinnDixie over 6 months =360,000 and I got a total of about 20 optins. These were in highly middle to upper middle class areas.

Part of the failure was that the local rep did not get enough high quality coupons
from other sponsors so people had no real reason to keep the receipt.

I paid an average of $6 per day to have 2k printed messages distributed. At those rates it seemed like a no brainer but results showed otherwise.

However I still think it could be effective for high quality coupons from nearby businesses that sold things that people need on a regular basis.. Like Claude mentioned- haircuts, restaurants, oil changes.
