Publishing Free Advertising Magazine

Hello warriors!

My wife and I are thinking about publishing a free regional advertising magazine. I wonder if anybody here does the same thing and would like to share their experience about it.

We would like to do it in a specific niche. We are juggling ideas right now but I suggested everything car related ( yeah typical guy!) but she also suggested one tailored to events. Like advertising for everything related to events. Rentals, caterings, party stores, locations, wedding houses etc. And this seems like a good starting point since nobody is advertising for them guys. It is actually and open niche here.

I am on the research part right now. And I have to say a google search has not really brought up much on this topic. I am also going around the local print shops looking for costs on big orders like 10,000 editions and stuff like that.

On that search I already got where one of my would be competitors prints their stuff which is a great start and eye opener since they outsource outside the country due to high local costs. But since we are starting I am not dismissing printing locally.

We would really like it if we could print full color from the start.
I am thinking about ad 1/8 page size (for the smaller businesses) 1/4 page size ( we paid 260 for that amount of space to one of our local advertisers every three months since their magazine came out quarterly) 1/2 page and full page.

People who are in the type of business related to the niche would have the opportunity to submit articles. Much like writing articles for a website which you put a link too, to them we would let them post their phone number and contact info maybe.

The down side is that you would have to either call your prospects or meet them at their business place. I don't mind doing the later since I was a delivery driver and I love to be on my car all day talking to and meeting prospects.

Me and my wife would be on charge of the graphics and editing. Mostly her since I would be on the road getting leads.

I know there's a lot of details that are unknown to me right now.

That's why I would like to run it trough the people here as I know there's awesome knowledge power here.

Guys I appreciate any ideas or comments.

If you are going to sell ads locally, a niche coupon magazine is going to be hard to fill. With the possible exceptions of a real estate magazine or one on auto sales.

I would make it all encompassing, and just find the local businesses that are already advertising in coupon magazines. Then go after the businesses that advertise in the newspaper and on local cable TV.

You also need to get your printing done at a commercial printer. The cost of printing and mailing will eat you alive. Get at least 3 quotes.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

How will you DISTRIBUTE your free rag? What would motivate a business to use you, how much will they pay?

See, almost all print ads are based on CIRCULATION, and you could say you have 10,000 in "circulation" based on number printed.

Before you do this, consider how many regular newspapers, whose life depends on selling advertising, are going under or cutting back. Then answer the question about distribution. It might be harder in your area to compete with established locations like your supermarket. Your placement is subject to approval. Another consideration, enter the competitive Auto area, and you might find stacks of your FREE pub in the trash cans put there by your competitors.

If your first edition does not produce results to cover your advertiser's costs, you probably won't get a second chance. As a start-up few businesses will take a chance with a contract, they will want to "wait and see".

I've been involved in several of these and most have lasted less than a year.

I strongly advise you to re-consider this idea, unless you really research your area...you'll spend a lot of money up-front, and sales will be hard...why not test this idea using a postcard, and see if you guys can sell advertising before making such a huge investment of TIME and money?

Everyone thank you for your replies!
We pretty much shot down this idea yesterday after I wrote this post. Like I said I went arround and looked for quotes on the printing. The least we needed to print was $12,000.00. That was just for printing. So not gonna go with it. There's a local magazine and they actually do this. It is targeted to health and well being. And they are successful at it. Doesn't mean everyone can do the same thing. So...this is history.

Actually, it's interesting that you are bringing this up. I have been doing exactly what you are talking about for the past 12 years, have three magazines and a sales staff and am in the process of creating a WSO that not only details EXACTLY how to do this profitably but also I am setting up a membership site that will allow you to have much of the work done for you. It's all in the strategy.

If you have some specific general questions, PM me and I'll see if I can answer them.

Anyone who wants to be on my early bird list, just PM me and I'll let you know when the WSO launches. In the meantime, if you want another idea for working with local businesses and getting yourself established, check out my FREE WSO in my signature below.
