SEO for local telecom company. Advice needed

I have been approached to do SEO for a local telecom company. They provide service in a rural area. They offer phone/internet (wired and wireless), wireless phones (I'm guessing reseller because they have national plans), and cable tv.

Now most areas just have one cable provider, and I don't see too many people searching in:
rural area internet or
rural area cell service or
rural area cable tv, etc.

Maybe I am missing the point, or I don't have vision, but I would think that they wouldn't need a whole lot of SEO work done besides optimizing their site because their customers will be looking specifically for them.

Am I right, or do I have no clue what I am talking about?

Are they giving you the terms or are you researching them yourself? If not you should be. Clients often want vanity terms with no volume so it's your job to explain this to them. If there really is not volume for any related terms then you need to approach this differently - the goal remains the same i.e. get more prospects to their website but the traffic needs to come from somewhere other than search engines. YOU need to ask all the hard questions.

    You need education based marketing.
SEO does no good if people don't know this type of service is available.

You can do SEO, fulfill your end.
But, they need to understand that just because they rank, doesn't mean they will get more customers.

You/They need to do a lot of educating. By educating I mean, letting people know the service is there.
    I would focus on:
    Direct mailings
    Telemarketing
    Door to Door
    Referrals
    JV deals

Usually there are not too many providers in a rural area,
so you'd have to educate them about SEO as Colm suggested.

I've seen local print and radio advertising work for these types of companies.

    Hi there,

What markets are you talking about - European? American?

If American, I'd contact the companies who used to sell those satellite dishes (the ones you see dotted across rural America) to the trailer park folks. Just copy their model.

    All the best,

    Sasha.

I think you need to widen your scope. If they are asking you to optimize their site, then they must have done their home work and for some reason came a conclusion that they needed your expertise. Otherwise, they are completely missing the point.

    My recommendations:

    1. Check on the potential related keywords people might want to find their site. Of course, this is assuming that you've done the other keywords already.
    2. Determine if you'd rather have them on ads instead on optimizing their site traditionally. If they have not done this already.
    3. Conduct a survey offline and online and hope you get something to keep you going.

    Make cold calls if necessary!

Good advice. But first establish that they've done their homework and aren't just missing the point.

Widening the scope: check the number 1 telecom company in a similar area far away from you. Check the top Google telecom company in your client's area.

Figure out what they're doing and why.

Do these sites seem like online brochures or are they're used to get people into the funnel, or as teaching instruments meant to get people into the funnel (as opposed to the previous, i.e., they have a 'join our mailing list' dohickey on the homepage.

If people search for car insurance and Google thinks they're in Niles, MI, Google will show Niles, MI insurance companies that aren't going for Niles car insurance at the top of the pile as long as their competitors aren't optimizing for that phrase.

The OP is taking the correct approach in seeking help and guidance. Telecom companies are restricted by territory, agreements and laws, many times unique to their particular company and the area they serve.

They are viewed as "utility companies", especially in rural areas. An extension of the services
    that a community offers.

All of that has to be considered first, before making suggestions or giving advice.

In short, you've really got to drill down and ask a lot of questions. It's going to be time consuming and you'll need to learn some things about the industry to be effective.

Unless you intend to specialize in the niche, you may want to save a whole lot of time and
    energy and move on.

The "class clowns" who show up in a thread like this, to ridicule the poster, ought to give it a rest. Your ignorance is showing.

I believe you would have to do some thorough keyword research for rural areas and see if there really is a lot of demand but, having said this, if people are living in rural areas, one would think there would be some demand on these particular keywords that you have chosen.
