I used pagemodo before, but to be honest wasn't that impressed, especially for the price.

Any ideas?

I usually just do mine by hand. Nothing difficult. There's been a handful of WSOs that have good and easily-editted PSDs for various niches.

Takes me anywhere between 10-15 minutes for full set up.

I am with Leon on this, you easily do it on your own.

Goggle fanpage PSD and you should find a template you can use for sizing.

      Thanks guys,

so you're basically just doing a professional timeline image, and a nice profile image or whatever that's called?

What about "tabs"? like would you do "contact us" "special offers" etc, tabs? and is there anyway to spruce them up a bit manually?

I would try doing it yourself. I think the main thing is the way the graphics look. I've tried to build a fan page several times and finally realized it wasn't looking the way I wanted it to; not because of my skills, but because the graphics I was using at the time didn't "look professional."

So since I was still on a budget, I took a couple more pictures and sought out a photo editor on elance. It was very cheap, and the pictures turned out looking fantastic, I would give that a shot if you can't get it to look how you want by yourself.

You also might try Get 10,000 fans. It has a lot of paid parts but there is also a plethora of free information that should help you out.
