and i am wondering where i can buy a list or get one

    I manually researched company information when I did direct mail. That's mainly because I sent out individual letters that were customized to each business. But you could also buy a list from Info Free (Unlimited Sales Leads & Mailing Lists For $49.95 Per Month | Infofree).

    It's crazy how many businesses never update their address when they change locations. I can't even begin to tell you how many companies I had to do some in depth research for just to find out what their actual address was.

    Have you considered Renting Email lists based in your Country and in your Niche industry? Some companies do offer massive mailings, No spam but legal massive mailings to their double optin lists focused in specific industries and areas of interest, etc.

    If correctly planned the ROI % in this campaigns are very similar to the typical postcard mass mailing old trick in the hat..

    If you're sending em' out locally I'd either find businesses and create customized letters, or have a VA do that. There's definitely an advantage to doing so, although it's time consuming. I'd consider it locally if I were you.

    EDIT: Forgot to add - One suggestion I'd give you is to personally handwrite the mailing address, etc on the envelope. If your writing is horrendous, maybe have a spouse or friend help you out in that aspect! The more personalized you make the letter seem, the more likely it is that the business owner will want to read through it and show interest.

      I would consider using yellow pages and making a phone call and then send a business post card as described earlier ( customized)
