A question for those offering site redesign....this has been bugging me for a while......

Hi,

I just had a quick question, thats been bugging me for a while.

I have read that offering site redesign to businesses that already have websites which are really old and in need of some serious TLC is more lucrative as these business owners already see the value of being online.

Heres the issue, assuming the business owner decides he wants to go ahead with a redesign, how do you obtain the hosting login details from the business owner in order to upload the redesigned site to his domain when you have completed the site.

As the owner is already with a web design agency of some sort, has this caused any conflicts for any of you in the past. Ie. when the business owner goes to obtain the details from his current company in order to provide them to you, the original agency may object and make this difficult for the owner as they dont want to lose them as a client.

Look forward to your replies on this,

Kind regards

Get a back up redesign it in a sandbox and have the business owner have the web company upload it.

i recently did my first mobile site and it was weird when his current webmaster advised him to buy from. a lot of web designers are not hip to mobile site i guess. i didnt have a problem getting the login info. i think this is a minor problem. after all most business owners have access to their login info

I have found in past experiences that if you redesign the site and send it to the owner so the web agency can upload it they do it since they are charging the client for hosting so they are still making money from them. If there is a problem with that, recommend the client to get a new hosting account so they have control of it and its cheaper.

The owner should have that info or be able to get it
from the webmaster or hosting company. Occasionally,
it gets sticky when the webmaster tries to hold the client hostage
or is slow to respond. The owner should be able to prove
ownership of at least the domain name and prove to the hosting
company via letterhead, etc. (Owners should always register their
own domain names, and I think own the website and contents.)

If you're doing the redesign, the previous webmaster
has been let go - unless there's other contracted work.
