First Offline Project- Helping Music Producer with Marketing.

A friend of mine has been involved in DJ'ing and music production for well over 10 years. He has evolved into an incredible original music producer in the Techno genre(mix of dubstep and drum 'n bass). He used to be signed to a record label briefly and toured all around DJ'ing, but as a two man group.

He decided to go solo as an artist a few years back since he was producing all their music anyways. The downfall is that the other guy was good at the promoting side of things.

So, anyways, it was about 9 months or so ago that I had gotten up with my buddy at a concert where in which he was one of the acts. He had given me a cd of some of his original music, and I was blown away by the tracks he created.
This is when a "light bulb" went off in my head. What a perfect project to get my feet finally wet in the offline and online marketing world by helping him promote his music, with the hopes he will get signed by a record label!

He was actually just getting ready to start producing a new album 9months ago, and finally has it finished.

I started about 4 months ago talking with him about what he needed to start doing right away.

1. Create a twitter page for his artist name, and start following as many people that have anything to do with music and his genre(other artists, celebrities, record labels, etc).

2. Facebook fan page. again connecting with others related to the music industry.

3. I set him up a temporary email addy and bought the domains consisting of his artist name.

Im thinking that putting out a press release would be the next thing to do. Along with creating an official website with the domain we bought. Putting his Bio, album and/or individual tracks for people to purchase. His availability for doing concerts, and some of his background accomplishments.

Also signing up for music social networks like Soundcloud etc.

Maybe picking one song of his choice and having a video created for it to post on Youtube.

Im looking for anyones advice/opinions on what I have laid out so far, what I missing and need to do, etc..... Thanks

Thanks Cobaki..... The music industry is so much different now then when I was growing up. The positives are that anyone these days can show off their talents on the internet with the hopes of being discovered. The Negative being that the consumer can now just purchase which song they like, unlike having to purchase the whole album back in the day.
If im not mistaken, musicians make most of their money now touring and performing live. With a good portion of the songs and album bought going to the record label.

I have 3 artists and 3 production companies that I have done work with and I highly recommend specially an artist to make sure he interacts with the fan via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. Make they they are really active, also create a mailing list so people can subscribe and call it something like "Join our VIP list and receive event's discounts, free ringtones etc" that way those loyal fans start recurring more fans by telling other people and spreading the word.

I 100% agree..... When I first made my twitter account I had new people following me that I dont even know. I did stress to him the importance of this social platform and to follow as many people he could!

Really interested in this thread. I have a few friends in the music industry but marketing them is so much harder than a traditional business IMO. It's so saturated I feel connections is the best way and no amount of marketing will help a lot.

There are some great tips here. One of the strongest ways to promote your music client is with video because not only do viewers get to hear his music, they get to see him "in person" performing. They can get to know him more easily through video. I highly recommend doing short interview style video where someone (you) ask your friend questions about their life, their inspiration, their music. For example: Ask about 2 or 3 questions then have them perform their music related to the topic of the interview. First question should be about something personal to them so we get to know them, followed by a question about the song he's about to perform followed by their inspiration or what they hope others will get from it... like what message he wants to convey. Then let him perform. Keep the video to about 3 or 4 minutes... 5 min. max.

There's more tips for setting this up and making it easier but that should get you started.
