How I Made 3 Quick $197 Sales Sending Only 25 Letters...

Hi Fellow Warriors,

I want to share with you a quick method I used lately to make three $197 sales by sending out only 25 letters to cold prospects. I was offering opt in pages for local businesses. Basically I set up a lead capture mechanism for a fee.

Here's what I did...

First off, I modeled Gary Halbert's famous dollar bill letter. You can look this up online. In essence you attach a genuine $1 bill to each letter as an attention grabber. You match this with a hand addressed white envelope so it looks personal. It works surprisingly well.

I somewhat modeled Gary's copy and tweaked it to fit my particular service. This made writing the letter easy.

Then, I looked at an online business directory for local businesses that had websites. I visited each website and noted if they had an opt in mechanism or not. Each site lacking a lead capture was added to my list. I simply wrote down the address for each business so I could mail them a letter.

Now it was just a matter of printing up the 25 letters, attaching the dollar bills and sending them out. It only took a couple of hours to do.

Of the 25 letters sent I received 9 phone calls from very interested leads. In the end I wound up converting 3 of them for the service. That's not bad considering this entire project took me only several hours to put together and resulted in nearly $600 in sales. Plus, it's almost all profit.

Not bad for a days work!

That's the basic method I used. I think you could recreate my results rather easily.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have and I'll be happy to answer them.

Hope you got some ideas from this thread...

So you did direct mail...but what's your offer and what content was in the envelope? That's the stuff that matters. But congrats. That's awesome to close deals that fast.

Sounds like basically you set them up an opt-in widget or box for them. My question is did you use your own autoresponder account or did you get them to buy their own accounts.

That is really good, a totally new idea for someone like me who have never heard about the dollar bill letter. I may not replicate the same, but this indeed gave me a new direction.

The $1 bill offer was surely an attention grabber. I am now thinking about other approaches on how to grab their attention with the same impact as the $1. Thanks for sharing this. I also would like some insights on how you made your offer that really convinced them. I won't be really doing the same thing. Just getting ideas so I can come up with a new one. Thanks!

You just found your own personal ATM.

$5/hour to someone in India to visit national directories, note the sites, type the addresses into excel.

You print and mail the letters (eventually hire someone else)

Make the sales over the phone.

$50 each site for a coder to put the opt-in on a site.

    You're dropping the ball.

Now, you get the 3 clients that you made extremely happy to write you testimonials.

Next you craft 2 different letters, one letter to send to the 6 other people who called you but didn't buy and the 2nd letter goes to the 16 people who didn't reply at all.

They can be similar but should be different.

For example, the letter to the 6 who didn't buy your services you can say something like:

It was a real pleasure talking to you on the phone. I'm sorry that you chose to not do business with me.

However, I did just want to take a moment and share with you what a few happy clients of mine who took me up on my offer had to say.

    Present testimonials.

If you would like me to do for you what I did for them, please don't hesitate to give me a call.

However, I do suggest you don't hesitate, as I may get too booked up and won't be able to get to you.

Because you did take the time to hear about my services previously on the phone I want to be sure you get first crack on my appointment book!

Here's my number again, talk to you soon:

The follow up letter to those who didn't reply should have something like:

I recently sent you a letter with a dollar bill attached. I sure do hope you received it, not just for the valuable service I am offering, but because there was a genuine $1 bill attached.

In case you missed it, here's my letter again (minus the $1 bill)

(Just copy and paste the first letter in smaller print, if you have to to make it fit)

Recently, some savvy business owners took me up on my offer and here's what they had to say:

    (present testimonials)

Don't throw any more $1 bills away by not getting back to me!

Don't wait too long, I anticipate I may have to start turning people away, so please call now so I can book your business into my schedule.

All of this is off the top of my head, and plenty of room for improvement.

If you're going to learn from Halbert, go full throttle, and learn the art of follow up letters

This is really interesting. Good job! I am hoping to learn more about what you sent in the letter.

I also really like Jason_V's follow up. That is brilliant!

    • Hey Guys,

Sorry about the delay! I've been having some trouble logging into the Forum.

Thanks for all your nice feedback.

To answer the question above, I generally have the business owner buy their own auto responder account. I've noticed it's easier this way and keeps things from getting complicated.

I hope you guys give this method a try. I think it could work for you.
