For those that write, talk and read
the word "consultant".

In the business world it is a paid activity
which stands on it's own.

Another words you get paid for your knowledge,
not for implementing your recommendation.

On this forum the term gets loosely handed out
which leads to being misleading people and creates misunderstanding.

    Not worth the battle Ewen.
I tired telling people the same thing a while ago.
A bbunch of people got their panties in a bunch when I told them they were service providers and not consultants.

Well certain consultants implement, some don't. Coaching is just knowledge but you can be a consultant and provide services as well.

Are they getting a separate fee for the consultation?

No...and yes, but it depends on industry. I personally don't like calling myself a consultant but instead would say I'm a service provider. Because just a 2 hour phone conversation with a client on SEO isn't going to accomplish much. So I think for SEO, consultant and service provider can be interchanged because I am consulting them although they need to use my services.

I know other guys who do consultation mostly over the phone but it's just about their client's business operations and how to cut costs and be more effective. Whether it's accounting, marketing, their supply chain, etc. That is more of a "consultant" than being a service provider.

All service providers do offer consultation, it's usually the first meeting with a client and I know some people do charge for their time like that.

I kinda rambled on but service providers (specifically thinking about people on this forum, so web design, seo, marketing, etc)do have consultations, but they aren't consultants.

I don't know. Accenture, one of the top five consulting firms, sends their people all over the world implementing the strategies. Their slogan is "High Performance: Delivered"

I've always seen it just the opposite of what you are saying. Consulting firms often come in with a team and produce work product.

I don't use the title myself. It is loaded with all sorts of preconceived notions that are often negative.
