Has anyone tried making a coupon book for certain towns? I know we have valpak and such but the prices to advertise in them are absolutely ridiculous in my area.

So i have an idea to put together a local book for people in my area. Has anyone tried something like this?

So for 10k books It will be about $3k

    6617 People in my area

To mail them it will be $10,057. But it may be better to hand them out. I could save alot of money on that

I figure theres 150 small businesses in my area.

Bob Ross' postcard method is similar to this and have had many warriors follow through and make money with it.

in my area we also have a mini magazine style that is taken on Valpak. It looks exactly like a small magazine just filled with coupons.

I would echo the comments above about Bob Ross's 9x12 postcard system. I myself have not engaged in such provision but I understand others did and made meaningful sums of money, some are still doing so today.

Coupon magazines can of course still work, and do work in many areas but I feel some are so poorly designed they are simply a turn off to look through.

If you do follow the book route rather than the postcard method I'd recommend finding a way to keep people interested and engaged above and beyond the coupon discounts themselves, people can suffer from deal fatigue, just look at groupon!

A co-op mailer (Postcard) works better than a coupon book. Much higher probability that all ads get "eye time". It is also far less costly for you to produce.

Success Tip: You must always have exceptional advertisements on your card. If you produce something that is the same ol same ol, the people see all over, then the thing is going to end up in the trash.

Encourage your merchants to make "better" deals for your card. Make, unique deals for your card. Not a rehash of the same thing they are running somewhere else.

Its when people know that great deals always ride on the card that they welcome it, and even anticipate its arrival.

I'm considering everything everyone has said.

My original thinking was Val pak charges 1100 for my area for one mailing.

I thought if I could sell an 8x11 ad (whole page) for 500 people may go for it

Hey WhiffySpark, don't forget to check out all that Val Pak offers with their ad price - mobile, web and print. Because that may mean something to some of these businesses advertising with them. For a small town like yours, I might be more tempted to create an online town directory and the advertisers get a discount for having posters and flyers in their stores. You could also send out coupon flyers once per month that is mostly promoting the directory and boosting its views. They can be delivered with the local paper for usually a few cents each. Keeps your advertising costs down and the online directory maximizes the number of advertisers you can get.

There are several ways to make a coupon flyer/book.

    Mailed to the person
    1. Bob Rose method
    2. Valpak envelope
    3. Flyer (multi page with inserts) - we get these locally

    Hand delivered to person
    4. Dinners Club Type of Paid Book - about 3 or 4 of these locally
    5. 4 but as a charity fundraiser
    6. Coupon Card (Pizza Cards/etc) - can be one business or multiple - also can be for charity

Loads of ways you can do this. Just pick the method and get advice from people who have done it.
