Have you built a marketing team? (Looking for input)

Just a quick shout out to the "offlines" on WF who have gone from doing everything by themselves to scaling their business and building a team around them.

Questions for you:

- At which point did you start putting a team around you?

- What advice would you give to someone about to make the transition?

- Given a chance, what would you do differently the second time around?

- Is your team local or virtual?

- What work did you keep on your plate and what did you delegate / outsource?

1-After burning myself out far too many times. Should have made this a much higher priority and done sooner.
2-Most people are fired because they never should have been hired in the first place. Take your time up front getting the right people to work for you.
    3-See 1.
    4-Virtual.
5-Work on the business and hire others to work in the business.

Awesome! Thanks for contributing. I hope more guys give their 2 cents and more.

Perry Marshall has this free test at www.MarketingDNAtest.com. I took is the other day and the results are scary accurate. The more I read and re-read my report, the more I understand the reasons for my failures and successes over the years.

Then I came across the interview he did for Crazy Egg that provides more of a background behind the test.

    Here you go...

    - At which point did you start putting a team around you? Pretty much from the beginning, hired a gal at $10.00 to do all the mindless data entry. Eventually shifted to Philippines.

    - What advice would you give to someone about to make the transition? Find someone you trust and who is skilled.

    - Given a chance, what would you do differently the second time around? Same thing, I do tend to get more consulting clients where I get paid to train their marketing departments.

    - If your team real or virtual? Both

    - What work did you keep on your plate and what did you delegate / outsource? I sometimes with set up a Adwords Campaign or Google Places, mainly because I want it done correctly. Most everything else is being outsourced on done by my team

    Good luck my friend !!!

    - At which point did you start putting a team around you?
Right away. As soon as you find work that you dread doing - get someone else to handle it. Focus on what motivates you and moves your business forward.

    - What advice would you give to someone about to make the transition?
Hire generalists early. Hire slow. Fire fast. Make a pitcher of Kool-Aid and make sure everyone who works for you is drinking it. They have to believe this is the very best product EVER.

    - Given a chance, what would you do differently the second time around?
Start focusing on sales much sooner. Driving revenue is job #1 of the business owner. Everything else takes a back seat.

    - If your team real or virtual?
I don't understand the question. Many companies have a distributed workforce. It is no less real.

    - What work did you keep on your plate and what did you delegate / outsource?
Offload anything that slows you down. These tasks will only get in your way and get you off track.

        - At which point did you start putting a team around you?

Immediately. There was a lot of initial work that was outsourced to save time with the initial launch of our business.

        - What advice would you give to someone about to make the transition?

Outsource the tedious work you dislike. It adds the stress of the business, and can typically be outsourced very inexpensively.

        - Given a chance, what would you do differently the second time around?

        Manage closely.

        - Is your team local or virtual?

We have both inhouse, and outsourced staff.

        - What work did you keep on your plate and what did you delegate / outsource?

        Management, customer service and billing.
