Flashy site vs. a "Dull" looking one?

I have read from different people here on this forum that they get better response rates from dull looking sites that those with all the bells and whistles that usually scream "lead-gen" all across them.

I ask this since I often see the question, "where can I find the best lead gen. theme template?" If the dull sites have a better response, shouldn't we just be building plain old sites circa 2000 style?

For those that advocate "dull sites" over flashy ones for the purpose of generating leads, can you post examples of such sites?

Most answers you will receive will be rumor and peoples opinion!

I suggest you test different pages yourself to see what works best.

Unless you do the testing or someone shows you rock solid proof of what works better (actual test results) then take it with a pinch of salt.

Also remember that what may work with 1 niche may not work in another.

I agree with David, even though i have had better results with dull sites, maybe your niche and traffic responds better to an bells and whistle site... build two sites and see which is performing better for your traffic.

These are the type of questions you really need to test yourself..

This was tested by some big marketer, can't remember the name now and it was specific to making money online sites. Cold traffic responded better to dull simple landing pages while traffic from the sites affiliates responded better to a polished site.

I don't think the regular consumer cares for dull simple landing pages when looking for businesses to do business with though.
