The richest handyman in the world...

If you live on the east coast you're probably feeling the heat!

Time to get AC's installed! I had a local handyman come install mine. We got to talking after the conversation and it absolutely the best conversation I've ever had with a handyman. I learned a ton.
  • He's covering the keyword "his city handy man" in Google via multiple classified listing sites. Very simple brilliance. Put your ad everywhere, and Google displays them all on page one.
  • He does a great job and is often asked; "can you do this, can you do that?" For big jobs - the stuff he couldn't handle, he'll connect them with a specific contractor and get 15% of each job. He's banking $175k in referral revenue. His close rate is stupendous because he basically "pre-closes" every client.
  • He gives steep discounts to wealthy clients because he said its easier to upsell them other stuff when they think they're getting a deal on exceptional service.
  • He's "spamming" Craigslist, using his 3 sons...
  • Got laid off as a landline telephone expert, started posting ads on Craigslist, one thing lead to another, now he makes more than was as an upper manager in telephony.

Goes to show what you can do... if / when you want it enough.

Lateral thinking and a willingness to try anything and everything will get you a lot these days. Good on him for using these techniques to benefit his clients as well as himself.

There's no way he is doing that well without SEO, Social Media, PPC, Youtube Videos, Article Distribution, Comment Spam, Banner Ads etc.

Gotta love how totally simple that is.

Not sure how he got his listing to appear on page one via the following sites:

        Angie's List
        Craigslist
        Home Advisor
Plus #1 in the 7 box...

But he did. 4x on page one - not bad. He probably didn't tell me ALL of his tricks seeing as how I tried to sell him my stuff after he was done...

I just checked in my area and those terms are wide fricken open. Anything optimized on page for those terms would easily rank.

    HMMMMMMMMMM....

    Gives me some ideas

    Time to get to work!

  • Pretty remarkable success story for a handyman or anyone else. This fellow sounds like he is amazingly able and really knows how to read people.

He comes across as able bodied, extremely knowledgeable, and all this with perfect timing and connections. He has much to teach about being a go getter successful businessman.

    Thanks for sharing this story.

        A word of caution...

Check your laws. Each area may vary.
Don't strike a deal with your nearest Craiglist handyman.

In Michigan, if the job is more than $600, they are required to be licensed.

Across the US, ANYONE that messes with an AC unit has to be certified by the EPA (environmental protection agency). At least a Type II classification.
There are 3 types. Type I, Type II, and a Universal. The certification is an EPA 608 (then classification). For example, I have the EPA 608 Universal classification. Then, in most states, they have to work under someone that is licensed by the state.

Don't get caught in a bind because your "handyman" thinks they can do whatever. Same thing goes for plumbing and electrical. Also, some jobs require permits get pulled before any work starts and needs to be inspected afterwards.

He found a great keyword to rank for with little competition and used channels like Craigslist to book labor gigs? The stars do align sometimes but I don't find it hard to believe at all.

Craigslist is perfect for finding small repair jobs or odd jobs to do for fast cash. The competition's ads are so bad you will see why it's easy to make a decent ad and get a flood of calls.

Not having mobile is probably losing so business but not as much as you might think. As long as you have multiple spots on page 1 of Google, you are going to get leads, mobile or not.

This topic reminds me of a method I used to make some quick money not too long ago. I would browse the skilled trade section of Craigslist for the worst ads and contact these people for ad design work. I simply explained to them how much money they would be missing out on and built them a higher converting ad. In almost every case, the results where immediate and the client was happy with their investment.

I'm seeing more and more businesses making significant
turnover using very simple strategies with various free
    classified ad sites.

And not just local sales either.

Many are making sales all over the country with these
    free ads.

There's an add on business service there I think.

Also once you have an ad working well on a classified site
you can test it on ebay too.

Lower risk (no risk really) because the business is already
making profits from the free ads and they can afford to
invest that tiny amount placing the same ad on ebay.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

Yes...any marketing strategy has the good and bad, but I would rather do something like Craigslist than try and keep up with the never ending changes with SEO...it's worked well for me

angies list should be doing these transactions, I think I read angies list is still not profitable after many years.

a company that has got to make a fortune is roto rooter, they focus on plumbing emergencies and charge a freakin fortune. They utilize a network of local plumbers and have them on a mobile phone GPS leash down to the second.

Craigslist, backpage, and other classified sites rank easily on google.
Just throw a few backlinks at them.
Plus people go-to these sites to look for contractors. So you'll get google browsers and classified browsers.
I know of a decent sized lead generation business (construction leads) who uses classified ad sites to generate most of their leads, all over the country (US).
