Interesting Offline Marketing Idea

18th Hole Advertising is providing the new way of advertising and marketing for your company. Businesses ads are printed onto quality golf towels, distributed to golf courses, then handed out as a complimentary gift to golfers. Each golf course gets a quantity of 200 towels per delivery, so the reach your business will have is unlimited!

I just saw this posted on a LinkedIn Profile. Figured some of you might like to try it locally or at least would be inspired by it to create a new marketing service.

Very interesting way to target high end clients and I could see this working good for businesses like a Luxury Car Dealer that needs to target high earners.

The business is new and I don't know this person directly (friend of a friend) so have not heard how it has gone so far.

I agree, high end is the way to go with this, except their website screams "cheap & nasty" and the photo of the product is really bad.

It does not ooze class and marketing confidence, unfortunately.

Perhaps a whisper in the owners ear is in order, before major sales are lost?

  • I like the high end targeting. This idea may work out well. You'll have to keep us posted if the business does well, Aaron.

Thanks for the interesting marketing idea.

      An excellent idea. well spotted.

But when you say, " Each golf course gets a quantity of 200 towels per delivery, so the reach your business will have is unlimited!" What do you mean exactly? It's probably a dumb question, but I am a little confused, so I thought it's best to ask.

As golf is played by a group of up to 4 people, I believe that the are saying that If one person in that group has a towel, they can spread the word to the other three, or I could be completely wrong

If I picture the scene of four golfers out on a beautiful day on the course, I cannot see them talking about ads on a cleaning towel, that's just me, and it may well be a smashing success.

I didn't go to their site to see the photo.

    And it's not my business.

Unlimited =200? Idk I gave up on math when they started talking about unreal numbers.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the find Aaron.

200 is far from unlimited, but I think their point us if you have unlimited funds they'll distribute an unlimited number of towels for you. This is another spray and pray method that might work if you could find a way to track its effectiveness.

Another neat golf promo is sponsoring a hole-in-one for a golfing event. You can literally "own" a golf tournament by offering a brand spanking new car as a prize for a hole in one. You get to promote your company excessively and you get to market to the contestants also.

You can buy a "hole-in-one" insurance policy for around USD $750. That way if someone gets to win the car you're only outlay is the $750 insurance premium.

Think of the PR opportunities for something like this. Think of all the golf events going on right now (summer time). You could find an angle for each one if you tried hard enough.

    All the best,

    Sasha.

That's an eye-opener. I can't believe the insurance is so cheap.

A few years ago, I read a newspaper article about a gang of gamblers that cleaned-up at the bookies by placing bets related to hole-in-ones in golf tournaments.

According to the article, hole-in-ones at golf tournaments are a lot more frequent than you would expect. And apparently, the bookmakers weren't aware of this and gave the gang fantastic odds on their bets.

I am not a golfer, so I personally couldn't confirm or deny if this is true about the number of hole-in-ones.

Many yrs ago I made Bulletin Boards for Golf Clubs in Aspen, Vail & Glenwood Springs Co.

These were large Oak Frames with the name of the Club across the top and 4 Ad Frames on each side for which I charged $185 a mo for with 3 mo minimums.

I also provided FREE ScoreCards for each club....also with Ads of local businesses. I got the ScoreCards from a Co in North Carolina (Burco International....BURCO Promotional Printing - Print for Promotion) who I think is still in business.

Local businesses LOVED to have a chance to have Golfers see their Ads and....I made a "nice chunk of change".

What did you charge for the scorecards? Interesting idea, too bad I have never swung a club but it is not too late to learn...

Sasha I knew about the insurance but had no idea it went for so little. I might look into that at the TPC at Deere Run one of these years.

    Hi there,

Ditto about how low the cost is. The last one we did about 2 years ago was $650 for a Jeep Wrangler. Two weeks ago my intern looked into it for a client and the price had gone up to $750. Peanuts.

    All the best,

    Sasha,.
