Google Places Pack question

I have a Google Places Pack question. If you put in a local keyword and 4 businesses show up in the "pack" section on page 1, does that mean that there is opportunity for 3 other businesses to optimize and show up? How do you know what the pack size is for that keyword?

    I'm no expert, but I believe there are 7 slots there to be filled. That's just what I've browsed on here and other forums.

    It depends on the traffic and size of area it can be a 3 pack 5 pack 7 pack and sometimes a lone ranger

      Nate is right. But also sometimes packs come and go and there are no local results at all for awhile.

      I personally think it depends in part on search volume for the KW.

      Sedation dentistry in a large metro might pull a 7 pack. But in a small town if hardly anyone searches for it Google is not going to give it a 7 pack.

      Case in point...

      Did consulting for a sharp SEO consultant who was having a hard time ranking his client. I asked him why he had a certain roofing service in his Places categories and told him Google was not even showing a local result for that KW in that city, even though it was a fairly common local search term.

      He said "I know from your training to check that so I did. 3 months ago there WERE local results for that KW."

      Well turns out 3 months ago was the rainy season in that market, therefore more consumers were searching for that type of roof repair. Then the rain dried up and so did searches and therefore the pack dried up too.

      A 3 or 7 pack can also signify there are not many businesses in that market. There may be 20 businesses, but only enough search volume to show 3 in that market.
