Best ways to find offline prospects/customers.

Hi all,

I recently started a job as a sales rep and the role requires a fair bit of cold calling. The role targets different industries, to name a few; hospitality, welding/fabrication, freight etc.
I was wondering what method would be the most efficient way of finding relevant prospects & customers. Utilizing google and random software that may be available. Possibly even a tool that can pull address, ph number etc, contact name and also export to spreadsheet for reporting purposes.

I am open to free as well as paid methods.

Thanks for your insights,
Adam.

Buy a phone list online. Get a pay per performance call center in the Philippines or India to get leads for you.

Buy leads of mobile numbers, landline numbers and e-mail address. Boost your social networks as well and advertise in your local magazine or newspaper.

Face-to-face prospecting, that is going into the business and asking to speak with the owner, and then asking him if he needs what you are offering will probably be the most effective in terms of 1 sale per X attempts.

PROs: It's free and the most likely way to make a sale in terms of number. When someone sees your face you have instant rapport (unless they dislike your face). Accepting rejection and asking for more builds character. Create sales not leads.

CONs: Time consuming. If you are targeting businesses where they are 'lined up' like a downtown area how many do you think you can hit per hour? 5? 10? I say no more than 10, many times you will have to wait to speak with the owner.

      _________

Email, write a sales letter using a mail merge that appears personalized.

PROs: Almost free, can be automated and scaled.

CONs: Emails really will only create leads, not sales. It takes a lot of emails to create a lead. People are basically immune to email marketing you are going to need to catch the right person at the right time with the right letter.

      _________

Cold calling, call businesses and ask for the business. I use a 3 line predictive dialer to make it more efficient, I can talk to 40 people per hour.

PROs: Effective, almost free. Generate sales fast. Accepting rejection and asking for more builds character.

CONs: Time consuming and not enjoyable for most people.

      _________

Direct mail, mail letters or postcards to ask for the business.

      PROs: Automated, scalable.

CONs: Costly and if your ad copy sucks you will get a 0% response rate. Direct mail generates leads not sales, you will still need to talk to them or meet them face to face.
