The changes in local TV news and how you can benefit

You may have heard the news story where a local San Francisco TV station ran bogus names related to the Asiana crash. The hammer has fallen, and several staff members were fired.

KTVU producers fired over Asiana pilots' fake names - San Francisco Chronicle

As the article says, local TV news teams are under more pressure than ever before to get news on the air first. They just don't have time to think.

You can benefit. Promote yourself as the "go-to" person when they have questions, or need a quote, about local offline marketing.

First you need expert status, established by speaking to groups, writing books, placing articles in local and national publications, and appearing on radio and TV whenever possible.

Look at Warriors like Claude Whitacre as a model. He speaks often, writes books, and is well-known in his niche.

Then call or write the news editors of the local TV stations and explain how you can help them. They may blow you off. Be persistent. Keep in touch. Send them story ideas. Show how your ideas benefit their audience. When offline topics hit national news for any reason (growth of mobile, local business changes, etc), offer a quote or a local angle.

Eventually they will call. Be ready--when they need a quote or info on your expertise, they need it right now.
