Google "Keyword Planner" SUCKS!! Any other suggestions?

Hey guys! Maybe I'm just an idiot, but for the life of me I can't get this new keyword planner to give me the same results as the old keyword tool. Does anybody have any suggestions for another good free local keyword tool? Or can you help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

Yes, it does suck - big time.

Under the guise of making things easier, what they've really done is taken away the granularity we once had access too.

I've recently started running some PPC campaigns and have noticed the more precise I get about the keyword phrases I'm willing to pay for (exact match), I keep getting "hints" from big G about how to get more clicks. Apparently, they want to wash you up in the "more clicks = more calls, customers...blah blah blah"...which of course is not true.

...but then again, I'm no PPC expert.

Exactly, you're right. Just another way for the "Big G" to screw the Little Guy

You could use Keyword Analysis Tool - Market Samurai

They have a free version that does keyword research.
I use it and like it. I also hate the new "keyword tool"

To view some competitor keywords you can use something like SEMrush - service for competitors research, shows organic and Ads keywords for any site or domain which has a free version as well.

Market Samurai, with the new Google update, is not the same... :-(

Such a shame to hear this. I was really thinking about looking into this. What I have heard is that it's great for keyword research, but not much else. The numerous functions it contains are nothing more than add ons to its Golden rules keyword selection tool. I also heard that the current version is loaded with stability issues, to the extent where the app will freeze if you attempt to analyze more than a couple of keywords at once. So Google is once again limiting us from even possible KW alternatives...

Yes that is true new Google Planner seems to be unfriendly. Google Keywords tool was very friendly but i guess working on google planner on regular basis will make it friendly.

Agree! Keyword Planner totally sucks and the fact that I can't save KW's I like so I can review later really blows!

Interesting... I always thought that was what the download function was all about .

The Challenge is using Google Adwords Keyword Planner this year for keyword research, and it seems to do an adequate job. I have trouble thinking they would recommend anything that was garbage.

Less options then before = fail. Can't get mobile specific search data. This is VERY important due to the fact that mobile search has been on a monster growth trend the last few years.

Keyword Planner = Google's plans to bleed us of all our marketing dollars, They only care about their bottom line...

We are cast adrift and on our own...

Not to mention the number of clicks it takes to do simple tasks like adding a list or changing a keyword.
Not very user-friendly as they always advocate and it's not good for your wrists, I had to write some macros to avoid most of the steps.

I have always used Market Samurai except for a couple of "let's see what this thing looks like" experiences.

Did the older Google keywords tool provide separate data for mobile?

Or perhaps a better question is how can we get mobile specific keyword results? It would be more than slightly interesting to be able to compare mobile vs non-mobile statistics

And I certainly see the trend towards increasing mobile usage. Putting the two together totally passed me by, so thanks for mentioning it!

I noticed that as well, the list it gave me was pretty much useless.

Back to Google search box with the autosuggest feature, then putting the keyword into inverted commas, looking to see if it's under 400,000 and taking their recommended search at the bottom as other keywords it is again then! Wee tip right there

Market Samurai was pretty good as well, not used it since the change so thanks for the heads up as I was going to try it tomorrow.

There's a guy on BHW that claims he can access Google Planner Tool's data directly via API and no captchas, etc.. and claims he's scraping the whole thing. Maybe they'll be selling their "granular" data to 3rd parties as "premium data", like SEOMoz.

Actually I thought it was basically the same just a bit more detailed in suggestions in the adgroup ideas.
