I was thinking of starting a business re-selling SEO and doing web design for local clients. Any one who has been successful at this kind of thing care to share some tips on how to get started? What steps do I need to take to gain my first clients and get the ball rolling?

    • Nice one. I'll have a good read of this later and may be in contact with you if that's cool.

  • I would say start with your friends and family,

EVERYBODY knows someone who owns a business, see if they will refer your services to them

A referral is allot easier to close,

  • My suggestion is to do the service yourself. You're going to need to answer questions, and sound intelligent as you do it. And the first several clients will be great training for you.

Now, I have employees do most of the work. But I have to know what they are doing. And someone has to train them.

Really, if this is going to be sold in person, or over the phone...I would learn how to do it yourself. Even in the beginning.

    • Go to Yelp for your area and start punching in types of business.
Look at the listings and the ones who have websites, take a look at them.
Maybe send them a SEO reportcard on how their site measures up.
Boo-hoo them over what they aren't making use of, and how many customers they're not reaching.

Ta-da! Tell them you can help them with that. Maybe offer to do a few for free or half price until you get some references under your belt.

All kinds of ways to find customers offline.

  • You should market yourself in local directory and local news papers, yellow pages and classified ads are two good ways to promote your business
  • Here's a great book that i picked up:

    Local Prosperity Guide

  • For me a good start was with friends and family... once that ran out i started with Yelp,Menta, and Yellow pages and also using facebook to message some leads.. Starting off there are many ways of finding business as there are 1000's of business started up on a daily.
  • I got into local SEO by ranking sites I own and then making deals with local businesses to pay me commissions on sales. This doesn't work for every industry ... must be high-value customers generally (at least that's who I target).

Yes, you take a risk building a site or a few with nothing up front. Plus you wait to rank. But you don't really have to sell. Once you have even a little bit of traffic, approach a business and tell them they don't pay you until they get a sale; your fee is a percentage or flat rate.

This model requires much less selling time and more time building sites and driving traffic. I recommend going for local businesses with multiple locations so you can really ramp up and generate a ton of sales for one company. It's easier working with one or a few whales than a smattering of smaller companies with this model.

Once you have a client under this model and they're happy, you have a reference so if you prefer to go with the traditional model of charging hourly/monthly fees, at least you have a reference and portfolio to use for selling your services.
  • You can hire market agent to local marketing of. Your services and you can use local ad posting on classifieds too

  • I prefer to sell Lead Generation, Social Media Marketing, Online Branding and Search Marketing to my clients. Web Design is non recurring and SEO, IMO...is so 2010.... :-)
  • I will suggest you to offer your services for a specific niche rather then local businesses
  • First of all you need to do research and make the raw data. Need to call the people who are running the business but don't have any website and also need to call the persons having website but it is not optimized. You need to explain them about the benefits of the website and how seo will help any website to generate local traffic to the website. Need to create small PPTs in to display the kind of services you are providing. You need to call them and meet them in person.

    All the best!!
