Constant changes/ new software etc

We are well aware there are multiple new software solving various issues for us marketers, ways to win on Google, Facebook solutions there seems to be new ways of achieving things every day. ditto many other sites/marketing strategies

How do you guys keep up to date with it or ensure youre using a good enough way of doing things .

IE lets use FB as an example , FB itself brings out new ways of stats and doing things regularly, then people create their own solutions , software, FB Apps etc , before you know where you are you could be using something that's far less efficient and effective , however keeping up to date with whats possible, whats out there can also be inefficient.

Being on too many lists is too much of a bind, using RSS feeds doesn't always give you what you want, I know theres sites like Social Media Examiner that are good and I use them but more generically, how do you do it?

Not sure if I didnt word this too well

    So lets try again

As true marketers we need to be on top of the game across all the fields, doesn't mean we are experts in all of them of course but ideally we need to know that certain strategies can work together , a Facebook strategy can complement a certain SEO strategy etc etc.

Unless we specialise in one thing that's a lot to keep on top of. If you specialise in one thing I am not knocking you at all, just that that isn't the way I do things , I use specialists /experts depending on clients budgets but I am not and couldn't realistically be an expert in all the things we actually do for clients, but I do need to be up to speed on things and with the likes of Facebook ever adding and tweaking things, people bringing out new solutions ,some better, some worse, its tough, but fun.

IE there could be 15 software variants for making the 'most' of the FB sponsored posts feature, some of the advice is old , pre updates, some is so cutting edge that hardly anyone can back it up, some is solid but on the down slope of the innovation cycle eg its about to be superceded so we don't really want to be going down that route , then add in all the other Facebook variants, then Twitter, then Linked IN then all the other IM ways, you see there is SOOO much going on its impossible to keep up.
Theres too much going on, ideas poorly considered but run with anyway, Im not talking about shiny new object syndrome here, Im talking about things that are used to get real results for real clients in real time ,

You find things that work and you run with them and stick with them, but at some point there are better things out there ,when and how do you determine when and why to change and what to then use?
