Frustrated and Seeking Advice

I'm not a newbie. I've been doing IM since 1995 (even for a large corporation, no name-dropping, though )

Having said that, I've had two frustrating situations and thought I'd seek advice from other IMers (it's tough sometimes to just depend on yourself).

I have two clients who's sites launched April and July. The April client is local construction and the July is for Internet Payment Processor. The construction person, I set the expectation accurately from the beginning for 6-8 months to see results but even I'm surprised he's getting so little traffic.

The merchant service guy expected applications to be completed the first month. He feels that at least one a month from out the gate should be happening. We're in our third month and no applications completed. Even his other crappy site is getting applications (according to him).

Questions:

1 Construction guy I'm doing Maps Marketing, Local SEO. He doesn't want to do PPC. What am I missing? I know Penguin 2.0 rolled out and Maps Mktg has changed but am I missing something for getting leads for this guy?

2. I am frustrated with the merchant services. I can't seem to get one application completed in the 3rd month. Ranking for his keywords seems to be tough. I tried doing local marketing since the competition is so high for his keywords. He, also, doesn't want to pay for PPC and doesn't even want to pay $800 for marketing (at cost as partnership vs client).

Not sure if I'm losing my confidence based on the results or if I really am missing the boat here. Would love some feedback!

I have never been in your exact situation before, but definitely try to get them to really think about PPC and what it can do for both of them.

If they don't want to do it, maybe you haven't built up more of their trust just yet. Or, you can simply do more natural SEO for them and be prepared to pay more for their rankings. In the end, they'll both be happy and be willing to hand over to you the money for PPC. Sometimes, all you have to do is know how to market and build relationships with your clients.

Its hard to find out what you are doing wrong when we cant see what you're doing right.
    So, you have two options...

    1. Post a break down of everything you have done thus far to rank.
If you did the same thing for each client, we only need a break down for one of the clients.

    2. PM me or someone else, and let them take a look at one of the sites.

I'm sure that you've already thought of this, but just in case...

Are they covered on the social networking front? If not, that could help with traffic, and if you get them fairly active on Google +, their rankings could improve from that as well.

Or maybe try non-mainstream social networking? For example, you could get the construction guy on Yelp, and then get his past customers to write him good reviews. I bet that he could make some money taking pictures of his construction sites and selling them as stock photos as well, which would bring money and traffic.

Since you are not a newbie I assume the processor website appears authoritative to visitors and not spammy?

95% of IM'ers have great relationships with clients who also advertise offline and with other people. Stop missing out on that cash and leverage into it. PM me if you are an established marketer and want to find out how.

Merchant processor sounds like one to let go. He does not want to pay and wants results in a very competitive field. PITA

Construction company. Google+ and video or photos to make his listing stand out when you do get him above the fold. Local review sites and local directories, blogs, and neighborhood forums.

    More info is needed, however.

Why yes you are. You want leads? You want leads quick? Then I suggest you bust out a bunch of videos (geo-specific). Obviously, you're gonna want to make sure you optimize them correctly and have a phone number in the Title.

For the ones that don't rank quickly, you may have to do a little backend work on them.

The power is in the numbers my friend.....lots of videos for phrases that actually have traffic (and some that don't) will get that phone ringing.

P.S. - I suggest you make a video that has a strong call to action and converts. Keep it short and sweet, but not crappy.

For the construction client, you mention that you are surprised that there is little traffic. How can you be surprised if you are in control of the SEO/Traffic campaign? You should know exactly what is going on and why for the rankings, traffic etc. If you are surprised that your methods are not netting rankings, traffic, results...then you need to delve into your own methods more. If it is a lack of customer calls to the client, then I ask..are you in charge of their On-Page optimization and sales copy? If not, that could be your problem. If you are, then you need more testing...

As for the payment gateway client.....just from the sounds of it....it would be a client dump to one of my affiliated marketing companies. I will take the referral fee and let them deal with a hard to deal with client. I only deal with clients that want to make more money and if they do not realize that they need to spend time/money to make more, then they are not a client of mine.
