Has ranking local videos become more difficult since Hummingbird?

I used to be able to upload a locally optimized video & description, ping it, maybe add a few backlinks, and have it show up on page one within a day or two.

However, the videos that I've upload over the past few weeks are either hanging on page 3 or disappearing altogether. They show up #1 in Google if I click "videos" or Youtube, but not in organic Google searches.

My other videos are still holding strong.

Is it just coincidence that the new "Hummingbird" algorythm thingie has kicked in, or have there been changes as far as video ranking that anyone is aware of?

  • Google update is here to stay, if what you have been doing isn't in correlation with their TOS then your ranking might hurt.

Sometimes, it could be as a result of your keywords, not optimized properly or competitive.

And you made mention of a few backlinks, how about a little few more than usual.
  • Thought it was just me. I had a few that came down a position or two after being pretty solid over the past year or so. Another newer one that was on p3 should be on p2 by now (1 week old, just based on past experience). However, it's gone completely on Google, but shows up on top in Youtube. I'll wait a few days and see what develops. They've disappeared before only to resurface a bit higher. Hoping the same situation here.

    • I made a post about this a few weeks ago as i noticed the same thing, lots of videos all on different accounts started to slide down the rankings, maybe this update is to blame.
  • Say hello to... Hummingbird.
  • No... nothing to do with hummingbird. Everything to do with not doing it properly.

Pinging, has no value whatsoever, don't even do it. Backlinks, that is pretty broad, what kind of backlinks, how many, what is the variance in anchor text? Are you using the phone number in the title and description that is the same as it is on the website? Treat videos like you would a citation or review site that you would want ranked above other citations or review sites.

    • Perhaps you are right but he said his method was working for him but now it's not so something changed.

  • The guys who are ranking videos quickly for local keywords are doing it with Google hangouts. There are videos on Youtube explaining. I've seen the evidence and it's definitely for real

    • Hmmmmmm....I rank local keywords quickly with videos but have never used Google hangouts. I'll have to check it out.

  • There is no difference between ranking videos now compared to a few weeks ago other than google is always changing, so if you are not analyzing what you are doing all the time. Then you are going to be left behind.

As for Google Hangouts, this no different than any other NEW internet property type that shows up. Google decides if it is a rank worthy property type and if it is, then it usually will rank quite well for the initial stages until it gets spammed to crap by the IM world. Since it is an actual Google product that is getting more and more attached to G+, that means Google loves it even more in the beginning and hopefully for a longer period of time.
  • According to this guide Google's Hummingbird updated explained - what should it mean for SEOs?, Hummingbird is mostly a relevancy-focused algorithm. Thus, it'll make Google show more Universal search results to your target users, including video results. I won't be surprised if Google became more picky with videos, and that's the reason for your difficulties in ranking videos.
  • Doesn't say a whole lot about videos, but seems to support what Sclark says about relevancy... (see the infograph)
