$297 from Restaurants

by midasman09 Banned 43 replies
After many years of selling AD programs to restaurants (to help them bring in more Diners)....I'VE found an ANSWER to how to get them to pay me $297!...for my Promo Videos

Restaurants spend "zillions" on their INTERIORS....HOWEVER....potential Diners ("hungry" people with money to spend)....do NOT know....WHAT the fabulous interior looks like..... UNTIL....they are INSIDE!

So....appealing to this "WANT"....I show restaurant OWNERS how....I can BRING THEM MORE DINERS!...by showing their INTERIORS to people looking for places to eat!

Here's what I do;

#1) I look for restaurants that have a website ...with an email addy
#2) I send them an email saying; "I've created a Video of your restaurant!" (In the subject line)(Although I really haven't....yet)

I then continue with; The Video I created for you, highlights your Interior and other features that will motivate people looking for places to eat, to dine at YOUR restaurant. If you'd like to see this Video, just hit the "Reply" button!"

#3) When I get a response from a restaurant, I THEN...go to their website, grab photos, make a video using PS3 or Movie Maker (with music) (usually takes me 30 min) and...upload it to my YT Channel, make it "Unlisted" and email it to my Prospect.....saying, "Here's the Video I made for your restaurant. I can UpLoad it to YouTube and optimize it for the Name of your Restaurant so that people looking for places to eat......can SEE it! Call me if you'd like me to make it Public!

Wow! What a difference! I used to make videos using photos from their websites....send the owners a note telling them I've made a Video of their restaurant and....2 out of 10 would respond. Which meant I wasted time making videos for the other 8.

THIS way...I (white lie) notify them that I've created a Video for them and....when a responder responds, meaning he's INTERESTED....is when I take the time to make the video.

So....results being, I only make videos for biz owners who have shown interest and.... "want to SEE" what I've created"! .....my "Closing ratio" is now 80%!

I hope you can see the "psychology" here.

"WORKS FOR ME!"

Oopps....I forgot to mention that this is only a "foot in the door". Once a restaurant owner buys my video he is then a "prospect" for other stuff.

Ex: SMS to motivate diners to return, TV Channel Guides in Hotel Rooms and....a "Restaurant Directory" for the local area.......and other of my "promos".

One of the Main reasons I like making videos for restaurants is; They are VERY concerned about their "Reputation". Many "Diners" Google the Restaurant B4 going there. If prospective diners are able to see a Video with "Positive Reviews" from satisfied diners....they are more likely to go there to eat.

YELP, Trip Advisor and other directories have "Reviews" that can be placed on Video Pages and....Restaurant Owners LOVE "positive reviews".

          So do other businesses.

No, No, No! I send emails to restaurants (who have websites) telling them I've made a video of their restaurant and....if they're interested, can send it to them.

I also send them a Link to a video I made for another restaurant so they get an idea of what their's will loo like.

Those who respond, I quickly make a PhotoStory3 or MovieMaker video, watermark it and send it to them along with my fee and payment arrangements.

I used to make the videos, watermark them and send to them

Love this! Thx for sharing this Don! I have been doing something like you were previously doing with making the videos first and then contacting the business but this is a much better approach. I have been looking for a way not to waste time on businesses that ultimately don't buy and this sounds like this is it... thx again. Will be trying this immediately!

Hey Russ....this has worked for Plumbers, Roofers, Carpet Cleaners and recently Pest Control biz.

It's MY way of "pre-qualifying". Out of those that contact me I get 1 out of 3.

Sure beats spending time personalizing videos for anyone who has NO interest in using Videos for their biz.

Don, your posts are entertaining. Seldom I don't chuckle in your threads but there's something missing here.

    1. Let's say you have 100 restaurants in Fishers,IN. How many have enough interior pics to create a slide show video? Big corporate chains or mom and pops? Assuming the later (because the first wouldn't give your email a second look), maybe 7?

    2. So now you've found 7 restaurant w/interior pics - how many would respond to an email stating that you created a video of their restaurant? I wouldn't. I would likely read it, and then feel stalked. I would wonder who was in my store (restaurant) video taping w/o my permission or knowledge.

    3. 1 & 2 aside - what purpose/value does the video serve? I'm not suggesting there's not value b/c there is...i think, but how do you convince the GM who just worked 70 hours that your video will bring in more revenue? How on God's earth is it worth $297? Where's the return? Trust me - they don't care how cute your video is, they want to know how much business it will bring in. I know you know that - but what I don't get is how the video, a la carte, is worth $297.

Interesting approach with g a p i n g holes. Using the video on Google local and ranking it organically might make a difference but that's another conversation.

There's about 249 restaurants in Fishers, Indiana. Restaurants & Bars in Fishers, Indiana (IN)
How many have websites with interior pics? Who knows?
Why do you assume that someone will not give an email a "second look"... are ya psychic?
If you received an email from someone offering a video, you would feel "stalked"? You've obviously never worked at a restaurant.
And you want Don to hand over his sales pitch to you as well, word for word?
And you need him to explain to YOU why a video would be worth $297?
I easily see where the gaping holes are.
      You should wear a hat.
Be careful out there... stalkers trying to sell things that nobody on the planet will ever find value in.

I just reread this post and have to say that I missed the golden nugget the first go round.

Don Wilson had a fb wso product a while back that featured selling fan pages the way you're selling your videos but because I hadn't committed to any fb marketing that prospecting method was never used. Your use of this method is a logical one for promoting videos which can be a bit time intensive especially if it's not outsourced.

I spent about 90 minutes yesterday watermarking web commercial videos for 20 hvac companies for prospecting purposes but after reading this, I will definitely include this email method as a split test for determining response/conversion rates.

Definitely OUT OF THE BOX but very effective! A lot of problems for SEO/ORM/SMM providers is finding good leads which have been sorted. What you do sorts the leads and not only puts them into the category of "good leads" (if they reply) but "really good leads who are about to pay". Good job!

I tried this. I emailed 100 restaurants in wealthy cities. Got four responses. Made videos for all four of them and never heard anything back. So zero out of 100. I'm not sure how he is closing the deal after they show interest. I didn't do optimization, only made the videos. After they show interest I gave the youtube link and payment link but with no luck. Not sure how to close the deal.

In my opinion, the first e-mail you send should mention "I've made a video for you and would like to show it to you. If using a video for marketing your restaurant in front of more eyeballs appeals to you, please hit Reply now; and I'll show you what a video could do for your restaurant."

Once the prospect replies, you pre-sell him/her by laying out the benefits of the video, mention that'll you do SEO for the video too, how it'll position his/her restaurant, etc. At this time, I think you can also mention your price while mentioning that you also just created a video for their restaurant, which you can show him/her 'no strings attached'.

There's still no guarantee that the prospect will buy from you despite you making your offer clear. However, you've qualified this prospect really well (better than what I read above anyway, and I'm sure you'll agree). But when you get a response, you make the video and send it. To sweeten the deal for your prospect and to improve your conversion, offer to discount your price by 15-20% if he/she orders within 24-48 hours along with your payment details.

Note: Also be sure to mention that the video is going to stay 'unlisted' and that you will take it down after a week. I know I'm putting it crudely here (someone in this thread could better it perhaps), but I guess scarcity has to be built in too. Do this by also reiterating the benefits the video will bring him/her.

P.S.: I now really want to see a sample video. I'd love to get my hands on this and give it a shot too.

MIDAS claims an 80% closing ratio? Perhaps he can post a few recent examples of his work. He never does.

After being asked multiple times to back up his claims in multiple threads, I have never seen any recent work. It's always feel good ideas from back in the day. When questioned MIDAS says he isn't selling anything, which is BS.

When you make closing ratio, $297, and $7,000 a month claims etc.....you ought to back it up or drop your claims.

I challenge anyone to post success of selling any "video" using a restaurant's website photos in a slide show for $297. Let alone several of them.

I find it troubling to mislead especially newbies who get excited, with these claims. Put up or shut up.

It's good you started. 100 is not enough to draw any conclusions.

When they show interest, what do they show interest in? Not a video, I'm sure, but a video that does something. They're interested in that something. Did you put it in your videos?

My "Restaurant MENU Guide" had Photos and Menus of 20 restaurants in each town.

I renewed these every 6 months for years....in 6 towns.

A few yrs ago I was in Wally World and happened to see a "Portable DVD Player" and bought it (Phillips)...took it home and made some DVDs of the photos I had taken....took the DVDs (with the Portable DVD Player) to show the restaurant owners and sold them to place on their website or.... I just made Videos with the Name of their restaurant as Title and uploaded to YT.

I then contacted other restaurants in the towns and showed them some of the Videos I had done for COMPETING restaurants and.....by golly miss molly....I sold THEM also.

I also sold restaurants by Phone.....however.....I am a "PRO-fessional" DIRECT SALES PERSON! ...who has spent over 30....I repeat THIRTY years selling DIRECT to prospects!

And....I didn't pick up a phone, dialed some restaurants; "Hi...is dee owner in? Kin I speak wid him?" When owner comes on; "Hi...I do videos. Ya want one?"

Well it's hard for me to do in person sales as I am in the Philippines trying to provide for my wife and baby. I'm not a good sales person as it is, but doing online sales through email is about the only way for me to make decent money for my family since I can't work here. I understand that you don't want to give all the details but most of us haven't been doing this for 30 years and have trouble "figuring the rest out". It's not like a handout, we still have to do the work, finding the restaurants and emailing and closing. You have great ideas and am happy to learn some things from you and other warrior members. I guess the important parts (closing the sale) are always the parts left out of the discussion. Take care. P.S. I do see how people complain and stuff a lot on here and I don't necessarily like it. I'm not trying to do that, just trying to provide for my family as most of here are doing. Sometimes we need a little break to help seal the deal and get our confidence up, especially if we are not very good at selling Thanks again

Did you put a watermark on your video to protect them? That would be a lot of work to do, only for someone to download the video from youtube and avoid paying you the fee.

I use animoto.com to make the movies. They have a watermark on the videos I create. If I want to get rid of the watermark I have to pay $30 per month, instead of the $5 I pay now

Animoto doesn't watermark the videos. The last screen says 'Animoto.'

A deterring watermark would be the url of another company showing every second of the video in the middle of the screen. Or the word 'Sample.' Big enough that it would make the prospect clients not bother with the video but not so big that the prospect can't figure out what the video is going to do for him/her.

Play with the free version of proshow producer and everything you create will be watermarked.

It's quite possible that some of the people you dealt with just took your videos and used them. Animoto's name on the last screen isn't a deterrent for a lot of people.

A super way of contacting Owners of biznesses to sell them is by sending them a "Sales message" in the "message box" on their FaceBook page.

MOST owners or top managers pay close attention to their FB page.

ALSO.....the one-time fee was just for starters. I've found they will pay MUCH MORE than that PLUS.....a "nice" Monthly.

Hope you have a great Christmas,

              Don Alm

I have the video unlisted, I dont see how they could have taken the video. I changed it to private just to make sure, but still don't see a way they could have used it.

Just speaking from personal business experience, and not making any judgments here, that at the end of the day selling something for $297 brings in far less earnings with a lot of work involved than selling something for $2,970, so the use of one's time to go after small sales like that is a factor to consider.

I don't know Don but have just read through all the comments out of curiosity, like most of us I guess.

I understand those saying they need more info but for a freebie, I think it's a generous gift. I foolishly admit I've paid for WSO's that tell you as much as this in the past...

Don's given us the idea, thank you :-)

I have done similar things with mobile websites. Sending out emails saying I have built a mobile website for their business and ask them if they are interested to see it. Great way to qualify leads without doing any of the hard work beforehand.

I offer a short video as part of a complete local business and search marketing package. IMO, its too much work just for a $297.00 one time shot. I would rather charge $750.00 to $1,500 per month and keep them as recurring income.

    • If my memory recalls , Don posted and audio of him selling a advertisement on a pizza box. I think it was a "cold call walk in" if there is such a term. I must admit it was quite impressive. If anyone else remembers that please repost.

I just can't see how you could get that much money for this. You can buy a cheap photo frame that might do a better job, or just have a free program to slap the photos together. Maybe if it was a slideshow on their website, and there was some Javascript coding involved...

But a guy I know sells fancier version of this for much higher price. I guess it's possible.

I Thank the OP for reminding me that I may need to do more white lies? :-) Because I have created videos and then tried to sell them a lot of time wasted!

Ok I have been doing similar things to service the offline business and some Restaurants but the bottom line is that they don't really care about the videos unless you really sell them on what the video will do for them and not just the video!

Offile businesses are not like we are they don't care about the hype they just want results, period!

    Here's what I do;

    Don Alm....marketing guy
Do you look for restaurants in high income towns? Or does it really matter?
