Best businesses to contact on Saturdays?

I've been prospecting accountants lately but I'd like to do something I've never done before and try a cold calling session tomorrow morning.

What types of business owners have people had success getting a hold of on Saturday mornings?

Yes, the worst thing in the world is when someone has to talk to someone who wants to help them make more money...

The only thing better than being on a marketing forum is making sarcastic remarks against marketing on a marketing forum.

From what I have experienced, you are correct that some businesses are more inclined to have the owner in the office on Saturdays.

    Bakeries
    HVAC's
    Furniture Stores

These are the only 3 that I can say with experience, has been an effective use of time on Saturday. I'm sure others can add more and I can't wait to see what other businesses come up.

Businesses like Bakeries and HVAC companies, are probably really busy on the weekends. Saturday is the busiest day for the bakery by my house. I don't know if I personally would pick the weekends to generate business. .

    Hi there,

You also have to bear in mind that Saturday mornings are most businesses busiest times. Saturday is the day when most regular punters have time off to get their car serviced, their windows cleaned, their lawnmower purchased, etc.

You might be greeted with some tasty language if you tie up a phone line on a Saturday morning.

    All the best,

    Sasha.

Hopefully most Warriors would have the good sense to find out quickly which ones are too busy to talk, and politely end the call rather than "tie up a phone line". If the call lasts longer than a few seconds, it is because they expressed some level of interest in talking; and if you have a decent message that helps them, they wouldn't be worried about the phone being "tied up".

If you're a decent caller who doesn't try to force yourself on people that don't want to talk, and someone still gives you a tongue lashing, that's cool, particularly if it's the owner, because they surely would have been a high drama a-hole as a client, just like they are as a call taker. There is absolutely no excuse for "colorful language" just because someone tries to make a polite sales call to them on a Saturday.

I say take the abuse early, if there is any, so you can get it over with, and not have to "get a divorce" when the inner monster waits until after they become a client to rear it's ugly head.

Realistically though, most people will treat you decently even if you are too pushy; if you aren't, an abusive response is extremely rare on any day of the week.

I guess I have to make my comments clearer. I started my sales career when the phrase "COLD-Calling" meant...walking into a prospects business IN PERSON .....finding the owner and giving him a presentation.

It had NOTHING to do with "phone calls"!

Then...we moved to "Pre-conditioned Controlled Mailings".

We would prepare a Sales Letter with a flyer. Then phone prospects telling them who we are and what we do and ask permission to MAIL an info package. (1st time prospect heard our name)

We then Mailed our info package. (2nd time prospect sees our name)

We then phone to discuss what was in the info package (3rd time they heard our name) and aim for an appt.

        So....my "sales calls" last Saturday were NOT by telephone but, "Belly-To-Belly"..."face-to-face" and....I did the AIDA formula;
        A - Get ATTENTION
I - Get INTEREST on how his time will be worth spending it with ME for the next few minutes
D - Build DESIRE in having me give an estimate
C - attempt to CLOSE a partial or full order or a commitment for a future appt.

        Works for me,

My HVAC client is closed on Saturdays and my furniture store client is having a HUGE sale today. Good luck with getting an audience unless you are buying a mattress or new sofa.

I've always found Saturday to be a great time to reach small business owners.

The busier, the better. The guy who is busy has money to spend with me.
The guy whose phone isn't ringing, who has no foot traffic in his store, won't
have the money to spend. He'll also be desperate.

No money and desperate are a bad combination.

You are making assumptions. Might as well make the assumption that the business where phone is not ringing have money to spend but yet to decide how (or where). When you call in and try to help, they will be more eager to listen and give you the money they have. Not to mention they will have more time and patience for your pitch.

A real bad combination will be when a business owner is busy serving customers and you call in, interrupting his service, trying to convince him that you will increase his sales. That conversation can go only one way.

Why not send them a lead generation letter before giving them a cold call?
Ben Settle did something similar for his wife who is also an accountant.

    It worked like gangbusters.

My first business was a "Burglar Alarm" Co in a suburb of Chgo and I discovered that the owners of businesses in "Industrial Parks" were usually IN on Sat morns.

No secys or "Boss Protectors". I'd just walk in and..the person in the office was usually the owner. I'd give my "pitch" and "Sell" my service.

Fast forward to 2011, 12 & 13. SAME THING! This morn (Sat) I walked into a biz making, of all things, "Cement" Ping-Pong Tables. I could not believe what I was seeing and....sure nuff, the owner was there and....he bought my "stuff".

Also....I called on a Carpet Cleaner, Pest Control Co, Auto Glass Co and Roofer....who were ALL in their offices.
