Restaurant agreed to provide prize

Hi Guys, I am starting a local sms coupon service, and to help build my list, I am going to run a competition. I approached a local restaurant, that is a very good restaurant, asking if they would be interested in supplying the prize in the form of a free meal, as it would be a prize people would want to win.

I got a reply this morning saying he wants to, and can I pop in for a coffee to discuss. Wow, things are getting real, I have no experience in marketing and sales what so ever, so very chuffed that he wants to get involved. Do I start off asking if he would be willing to offer this prize out of his own pocket? Or should I offer to pay some of it? Just not sure what to say when I meet up with him

He's already told you that he is prepared to offer a meal as a free prize.

    That's it.

I would not offer to pay "cash" for the meal. Instead, what I would do is tell him since he is doing this for you...once you have established a large enough database you will send 1 message out on his behalf to help generate customers to his store.

If you have a targeted list, not only will he be very appreciative of the business you bring him, but then you can sell him on helping him create his own in-store SMS cmapign(s).

Why would you pay for the prize he already agreed to provide? It's HIS business right? I'm sure your anxious about your meeting but you're going to do great. Just make sure to be firm on your rate, and if he bites, he bites.

I don't think he's selling him on anything at this point.

Actually, bigmaz I know exactly what you're trying to accomplish and I wouldn't talk pricing at all with this client at this point. Let him help you build your database (that's where your money will be) and then if he is interested in having you blast out to your list on his behalf or helping him create his on in-store sms campaign...then you can talk numbers. But, I highly suggest you do't at this point.

Okay I see. I still feel the same way though - HE should be responsible for his own prize and you should play the consultant role. You're the one coming up with ideas to help his businesses. The least he can do is provide a free meal right? I mean, his cost on it is like 20% of what he charges... So like $3 bucks tops? It's the principal.

Thanks for the input. I am building my own list, and I need a prize to help it along. He is going to be supplying the prize, and in return, I will be sending out a coupon on his behalf to my list when I launch. But your right, its a good selling point if I decide to go down the route of helping companies building their own sms list.

While you're building your consumer recipient list, don't miss the fact that as a "courtesy" for helping out by supplying the free dinner, you'll do not just one, but several messages on the restaurants behalf. Put a time limit on it,for example, that you'll give them 3 months service.

    WHY?

Because you're building your business and you want to be able to turn around and show other businesses the work you've done for this guy. You want that restaurant's business referrals and testimonials. Plus it could lead to a paid engagement with that restaurant.

Thanks for the reply guys. Yeah, I have offered to blast a coupon for free to say thanks for supplying the dinner. Still not met up with him yet, but will hopefully see him within the next few days.
