How to describe my services as a Digital Marketing Consultant to payment processors?

by kumar 7 replies
I'll soon be looking for a payment processor-mostly Paypal or Fastspring, to take payments from small businesses in US.

I'd be working as a marketing consultant, helping them increase their sales through online marketing. I intend to outsource most of the SEO, website design etc to others while focusing on my core strengths-Sales and Project management.

I didn't check yet on Fastspring, but Paypal (India) has fixed Categories and Sub-categories from which to choose your Business services from.

The closest I could see are:
B2B-Marketing
B2B-Consulting
Computers Accessories & Services-Web Hosting and design

Aren't we B2B service providers? I think B2B-Consulting is what would fit our profile best while signing up for Paypal.

Your thoughts and suggestions?

Thanks!

Depends on the level of done-for-them work you do.

If it's 100% then, marketing would be appropiate.

If you are part teaching part doing done-for-you
and getting paid purely for the teaching part,
then you're in the consulting category.

    Best,

You do not want to choose the consultant category or you have a higher risk setting than others. You want to basically just say marketing, or advertising. The best is to just stick with advertising.

Digital marketing, hosting, SEO, web design, etc. are all high risk services that merchant processors really don't care for. Advertising, everyone understands, best to just stick with that since its what it essentially is.

nameless is right. I have a merchant account I've held for two years now and process a lot monthly but I was limited in the beginning because they had gone on my website and saw SEO was offered.

They made me sign paperwork saying I could not process anything for SEO and couldn't process anything over $1,000.

After a few months of doing a lot of business they eventually removed the limits and the 'watchful eyes' but just be considerate of what you're telling them you do.

Something to add too, if you use a real merchant account you're likely to have MUCH better customer support than using paypal (or squareup).

Chargebacks were a breeze to handle through my merchant account, with them even giving me temporary credits once they felt I was right, rather than waiting for the customers case to resolve.

Paypal and square are both complete nightmares for chargebacks regardless of whether you're right. You'll wait ages for your money back.

Thanks Gentlemen. That was helpful advice.

I just wanted to clarify: In essence, we would be classified under B2B-since as a business,
we are providing services to another business, right?

I have been involved in B2B since 1988, both offline and online and I would agree with the others that you should classify as either B2B marketing or B2B services, whichever option the merchant account provider allows.
