Payment gateways on websites

If using WP what are the better options for payment gateways so clients can take payments over their site , is it necessary to pay out a lot for this capability ?

Thanks

It would depend on their volume. If they are processing a decent amount look into authorize.net, pricing would really depend on the sales office/processor you setup through. I don't want to push anyone's buttons or break the rules so I wont post my pricing, feel free to PM though.

Some other popular options are Stripe and Braintree Payments - both of these are 2.9% + $.30 per transaction and these are who I will refer smaller clients to (not an affiliate) that would end up overpaying using a traditional processor with authnet.

Until you have the volume to justify the cost of a merchant account and payment gateway, you have two options right now:

Stripe: No monthly fee and same cost as PayPal, .30 plus 2.9%. 7 Day rolling payout to your bank account.

PayPal Pro: $30 a month and allows for accepting payment on your site as well as PayPal. Transparent to customer, they just think they are using a credit card.

All of these you will need a SSL certificate and you want to be very careful on both the plugins you use as well as keeping the wordpress install up to date because notifying customers of a data breach is not fun, just ask Target and Neiman Marcus.

If you are talking about things like classes or services, another option is Wepay which allows you to add javascript that pops up a checkout screen on site (mobile as well) which is nice for things like consulting fees and what have you.

Once you have enough volume you can look at Authorize.net or other payment gateways. You are looking at anywhere from 0 - $299 set up fee. The higher fee buys down the monthly and per transaction fee.
