Hey Warriors -

I've been utilizing wf for a long time but just joined and thought I might open a discussion about Yelp.
Yelp seems to be one the biggest sources of pain for the local business, but yet no one that I've see has a solution for it or is even working it!? Is that true or am I missing something?

Got a client who has 8 reviews. Yelp is filtering the last 4, all of them positive. Presumably because the people don't have other reviews, or friends on Yelp.

But the worst one comes from someone who's got 13 reviews, all of them, and most not useful... Stay away from this place, they're thieves.

    No reason why they're thieves.

Why can't someone who has no friends on Yelp and isn't into posting lots of reviews be considered less trustworthy than one who has no friends but has posted 3 reviews on Yelp.

Interesting, just to be clear - the 1 Yelp account who posted the negative has written 13 reviews but has no friends?

No. He/She has 1 friend. One of the best reviews that is not filtered is from someone with 68 reviews and 0 friends.

Yelp seems to not like 1 reivew, 0 firends. Has no objections to lots of reviews, no friends or to 1 friend, 1 review.

I just don't see much difference between 1 friend, 1 review and 0 friends, 1 review.

Yelp first and foremost = social media site. That's their vision that's the community they want build. Reviews are an after thought really.

Absolutely agree Russ - they even go so far as to pay 'community managers' a good salary to manage a particular geo area. EG - a quick search showed 5 such jobs on GlassDoor.com right now...a little eery but they're protecting their assets, the reviewer community.

I think most small business marketing managers hate yelp. The question I have is that we all have competitors that are seemingly "winning" at Yelp.

My competitor has 13 Reviews Showing for a 4 star rating. They have 14 filtered reviews, 50/50 positive and Negative.

My company has 13 Reviews showing for a 2.5 star rating. I have 47 filtered reviews, 11 negative and 33 5 star and 3 4 star.

Makes no sense. So many of our filtered reviews are long term customers that reviewed out of their own heart without us pursuing it.

Shit, one flat out says, "I wouldn't have written a review but I saw them have 2 stars... They are a 5 star company and have used them on both my properties for years"

It is seemingly ODD that the higher reviewed companies actively use their PPC program... I know they don't manually manipulate the reviews but this has to be helping them earn these rankings no?
