Postcard Marketing in Uk (Web design company)

Been looking into dozens of posts in WF and saw a few about postcard marketing in the local area. Has anyone else done this, with regards to marketing a Web design service?

I am in a large city in the UK, so some of the material here doesn't apply to me.
I can't really use the same services to get a marketing list, as most of them apply to the US. However, have found some services out there where I can buy from.
Our version of USPS EDDM is probably the Royal Mail Door to Door. This would mean I don't need to buy a list - but I can only target either consumers, or business addresses + consumers. And I don't know yet if I can make the campaign targeted. However, it means they do the printing and postage, so saves a lot of hassle.
Also, found this service - https://www.imail.co.uk/marketing_postcards/
Awaiting reply if they can send to their own marketing list.

Also, what have the results been with using a small postcard, or a larger postcard?
And any recommendations on where to go for copy/design of the postcard - This is really going to be key I think.

Check out docmail for the UK. They literally sent me a 'we miss you' card yesterday. I think the site is cfhdocmail. They print and post for less than the cost of a stamp.

Don't worry about buying a list if youre just messaging local businesses. Go on elance or something, and get someone to build you a fresh list of local businesses. Failing that, you can do it yourself.

    Good luck.

Would you say message only B2B, or is it worth trying B2C?

      Hey mate.

Well one of the most important things with direct mail is the quality of your list. If you have a list of businesses without websites, or of businesses with poor websites, then you know your list is targeted. It's pretty easy to compile that kind of list yourself.

But if you know some way of finding a list of targeted consumers, who are looking for websites, then I suppose it would be worth a try. But I wouldn't know how to source such a list. Please remind me, and I'll try to find the UK list broker who was recommended to me. It's in my inbox somewhere, but I haven't personally used them.

Thanks a lot. So would you say target households, rather than businesses? I have emailed them to see if they can source a list of consumers looking for websites, worth a try, although would be very expensive I think. Next best thing though, just target as many consumers as possible, or target as many businesses as possible?

My advice would be to target a niche, don't just offer 'web design' services, you won't stand out from the crowd, but offer 'expert web design services for XXX' with XXX being the industry you target, then you can target your marketing message directly at the industry rather than being generic and you can stand out from the crowd, for example...

          - Mail out to local takeaways explaining how you can increase their orders and average order value
          - Direct them to a landing page on your website all about them, what you can do for them and what you offer
          - Base your offering around how you will benefit their business.

By laser-targetting your marketing you can be much more successful, focus on one niche, market it to death, get lots of sales, then move on to another niche.

          Hope that helps!

Thats a good suggestion actually, thanks. Only thing is, I am kind of in the area of budget website creation (only charging 300$ to 500$ ) and I outsource to a team - Not sure if I underestimated just how it may raise their expectations too much if I tailor too much to them.

  • It would be a shame to get the perfect distribution and not have great copy.

    This "Secret Formula" might help.
