Strong call to action on site for web design clients?

Would you say this still follows with regards to getting web design clients? Getting clients onto the website is not much of a problem, you can get traffic if you're persistent with your marketing methods.
But I thought about it like any other online purchase - to get them to make an impulse buy, or to at least fill in details so they get contacted.
I thought of having some kind of pop-up with a big graphic and something like "Get a Free Quote" or something, where they can quickly fill in a few details. Does this sound like a good idea?

I can't wrap my brain around websites being an impulse buy. However, it's a good idea to get people to say they're interested in something you're selling and give you a way to contact them again.

A free quote is not the way.

Maybe the freebie would be a step-by-step self-analysis of their website or a request for you to analyze it for a small fee? (I don't do websites, so I don't know what the best items/services to get people into your pipeline, but I like the idea of having them sort themselves into interested into what my website is/does and not interested.)

Yeah, don't go for the free quote... That's expected.

I like what DABK said.. some kind of free analysis of their current site. Create some kind of free guide to give tips on how the prospect can make their current site better, or some kind of checklist the prospect can go through to see if their current site has the right "stuff."

Ok thanks for the tips. So with the checklist - it may actually jog something in their brain that "Maybe I do need a new website..." that kind of thing?

Yes, for some it will do what you say. But that's not the main goal is to get them to tell you they're interested in their website performance enough to give you an email address and download a checklist.

You will then have to send the ones who download the checklist messages to show them that an outdated website costs them money.

Some of them are interested but they already have an updated site. Those will ignore you. The others, some will hire you... if you send them the right kind of message at the right time.

But you won't know who till you start a conversation.

So, get them to say I'm interested, then stir the pain the download exposes.

Yeah! Or, maybe it just needs fixing. Do you just create websites from scratch, or would you be willing to "spruce up" a prospects current website?

Mines is really just creating new ones - and its quite low cost as well - only charging from 300-500$. So not sure what approach I need to go in with.

The ONLY popup that I personally like is one that pops up when I exit a page where I am contemplating a purchase and I am then offered a lower price.

A suggestion could be to offer with your free quote, a professional analysis of the top 10 websites ranking in their niche with an offer to improve current site or build a new site on those findings.
