Help!!!! I killed my website! :(

I host a website on dreamhost and I am in the process of re-branding my company and my website. I bought a new domain name and changed that domain name to "fully hosted" and changed my old domain name to "redirect" to the new domain. Now I have nothing! When I try to pull up my site it wants me to download a site to the domain.

Anyone know where my website went? Is there a way to get it working again without starting over?

Thanks for any help.

new domain: smartdrycarpetcleaning.com is almost here!
old domain: smartdrycarpetcleaning.com is almost here!

The old domain redirects to the new one fine. I am not familiar with DreamHost but probably you need to change a setting so that the new domain will be linked to the directory that you previously have for your website. Why don't you contact their support about this?

Thanks for the speedy replies. I did fill out a contact form with Dreamhost with my request first thing this morning but have not heard back from them yet. I was just getting impatient knowing that my site has been down since last night and I was just trying to figure it out myself in the mean time.

If it's an html website: Just use your FTP client, create a new folder, download all the contents into the new folder and upload those files to your new domain.

If it's wordpress, there are backups that will do this for you.

There are ways to direct this correctly, but the above is the easiest away, at least until you get it figured out.

This is really a 1 minute fix through your cpanel. Just add the new domain to your cpanel and enter the directory of the WP install.

I still haven't heard anything from Dreamhost.????

iAmNameLess, any way you could give me those instructions in more detail for a dummy? It sounds simple but I just can't figure out how to do it.

Okay, I'll break it down an even easier way.

        1.) Login to your cpanel
2.) Go to Domains, or Add on Domains
3.) If you haven't added the new domain, you would do so here.
4.) Login to your FTP program, and move all the folders to the new domain folder
5.) If you haven't already, in your cpanel create a 301 redirect to the new domain.

        That should fix it.

I don't know how dreamhost works, but there would be a quicker way but sometimes different hosting companies won't give you the option to change the primary domain on an account.

Sorry dave, never had an issue they didn't help resolve quickly. Are you sure you've contacted them through the support ticket system via your private panel at panel.dreamhost.com? PM me maybe I can help connect with them if you still need the help. Cheers

Did you JUST add the new domain or was it added already? Also, where did you register the domain name? Did you change the nameservers or A records in the DNS settings to reflect the hosting?

The new domain name was added a few weeks ago already. It was registered at Dreamhost. The rest, I don't know anything about! LOL!

It should be instant then, so something went wrong. Do you have a shared hosting account, or reseller?

Before, your files were probably located in /public_html/

Now, they should be located in the folder you specified the domain location. so it would be /public_html/newdomain/

Its just a shared hosting account.

I renamed these 2 files and actually just flip flopped them. I got through to dreamhost on a live chat and I think this is what they told me to do but it doesn't seem to be working.

Sorry about all the questions, I'm well aware that I am an idiot!

Dreamhost is the worst I have ever experienced. Get yourself a new host with responsive support that doesn't hide. You'll be much better off in the long run.

It looks like I finally got my main issue resolved on my 3rd live chat attempt. I think I have more work to do to get my pages back to ranking where they were but at least my site isn't completely down now!

Thank you all for your kindness and your help! It was much appreciated!

I'm really not sure. Must have been something to do with the way I named the file. The Dreamhost guy fixed it for me and didn't really explain what he did. I didn't ask, I was just happy to have my website back. Now to get my rankings back that have been dropping like lead bricks.
