Do you think this strategy still works? If so, what modifications may be required?

I just finished going through this: The Gary Halbert Letter

Even though there has been a lot of changes since he published the letter (I believe in the 1980s), do you think this strategy still works?

After all, the market research on the psychology looks similar, even though we now have a ton more information out there (on the internet) than the 1980s (libraries, bookstores, trade publications, consumer magazines).

The distribution channels have increased from just direct mail and print media to search engines, affiliate networks, social networks, etc.

Anyway, what do you think needs to be modified to work in the 2010s? Has anyone here tried these recommendations? (btw, I'm going to start testing anyway)

I would take this discussion to the Copywriting forum. They are familiar with Halbert.

But why would it have changed? Has human nature changed?

The mediums may have changed, ie. to Amazon/Kindle or membership sites.

But you had still better be proud of what you're selling.

And it had better create a ton of value.

Look at something else: Halbert's success story in this letter isn't a chump change loser. He's a jeweler. Sell something that is worth good money.

Human nature hasn't changed. The mediums and sheer amount of information has changed though - hence the concern of certain tactics not working, even though Gary Halbert is the real deal.

The moral of the story is there are smart people who are willing to trade money for time to learn something intrinsically valuable to them.

When you sell something you love, and truly believe it will benefit/help the customer, it usually shows (in your writing and speaking) unless you are not decent in expressing yourself. And, when you come across as genuine, the trust is gained, and that is everything.

Here's a test. Try giving away something free. If you can't, they don't trust you.

Hey thanks for the letter. It was a very interesting read. Because of the internet doing research is so much easier and quicker. I'm going to apply the principles of his letter in my business efforts.
