Experiences Selling Physical Products On Craigslist?

If there's ever a reason why I'll never understand human nature, well this explains a large part of it. To explain, I've been trying to sell really good physical products on Craigslist for a month. These are items in my household that I no longer need anymore. So I want to sell them. I thought it would be a simple task, but wow! The red tape you have to cut through to find someone competent, if you're lucky.

There are two types of idiots I deal with. Number 1, the fake check scam where they have weird looking email address, a robotic script, and form to fill out. At least those I can laugh at and report as spam.

Now the second type of idiot I deal with is the worst kind, the ones who contact you showing high interest in your product, letting them know the item is still available and negotiating a lower price with them. Including the fact you always ask to meet in a crowded public place. Of course you would think offering a lower price will make them buy, wrong!

I had a *highly interested buyer in an item I had for sale who emailed me 3 times yesterday, and I told her the item was still available and we were to meet in a public place for the cash transaction and item exchange. As I get in my car, she calls right back and of course making an excuse she had to cancel. Make matters more laughable, her previous item miraculously was already "fixed" blah blah.

And if there's a reason why I hate face to face sales or dealing with people in general, it's because of incompetent idiots like this. This new generation we currently is loaded with them.

Above all, I've gotten all the excuses on why they cancel etc. I just hate stupid games.

My question is, do people get off on wasting other people's valuable time? Or are people just that flaky, dumb and dense regardless?

People are just that flaky and dumb. I gave away a bunch of stuff on there, including nice items that I easily could have sold, and other than one or two thankful individuals I might as well have just lit the stuff on fire. I had two large items that were in my basement and I specifically stated that if you want it, you move it. Idiot guy showed up with his tiny wife and then yelled at her as she couldn't move the items. I ended up doing the lions share and moved the stuff I was giving away with him. Pissed me off.

I once had a cell phone for sale and a lady wanted it. We negotiated a price and met in a public place, where she tried to trade me an electric toothbrush for it. No cash, just a supposedly new in box toothbrush. I walked away.

Well stated and just as I thought, I was right. I remember the old days when people understood directions and didn't have fecal matter for brains. Like I said, we live in a new generation where people think it's funny to play dumb games and waste people's time.

You get what you pay for. Free advertising doesn't always bring the best quality.

What's the point of having a sig if no one buys from you?

Still, you might have better luck getting someone to travel across the pond to meet you than for a local to do what they say.

I tried making a business out of selling cell phones on craigslist.

Never again. It's the paradise for deadbeats and ghetto people.

You'll get people offering 80$ for a brand new Iphone.

Haha! There's nothing paradise related regarding craigslist. I think you meant cesspool?

I was selling my paintball gun on Craigslist many years ago. Someone responded saying he was very interested. He then asked for my address so he can see the gun. I gave him a business address and where to meet (high traffic area) and all of a sudden he said he was no longer interested.

I'm pretty sure he was going to tie me up and steal all of my stuff. Ha

Good thing you didn't give home address. Sounded like he was potentially that type. You'd be amazed some people today give buyers their home address. Not smart.

I have done tons and tons of CL buying and selling (mostly cell phones and other electronics) and here are a few tips!

Put a phone number. If you dont feel comfortable putting your own phone number then download a free texting app and use that number! A huge majority of scams and "tire kickers" come from email.

When meeting someone always insist on a place very close to where you live. What I do a lot of times is wait until they tell me they are there before I head there. I just say ok thanks running about 5 mins late and I leave then. This cuts down A LOT on wasted time from you going and waiting for someone who doesnt show or call.

If you have one in your area, I've a had a lot more success selling things on bookoo (bookoo.com) Still not very widespread though, so you're lucky if you've got a good-sized one nearby. Its like CL, but far less spam and crappy/creepy people
