Advice for Consultants selling Web Design or Marketing

I'm not an "offline" expert by any means, but I've been doing pretty decent the last few years with my company and thought I'd share some "basic advice"...whether it's an attorney, or a locksmith, the bottom line is every business wants more revenue/ROI, they don't care about the term HTML5 or PHP, they care about getting more business.

So as a "consultant" you should go in to your initial meeting with the intention of better understanding their current marketing setup, processes, etc. Once you've gotten that info, you can then package together a proposal which should outline a plan of attack, which you've successfully implemented in the past. Assuming they've agreed, you then implement and deliver!

I have many clients who have seen great results in the last few years because of a plan of attack I put together, not based on theory, but based on case studies, tests, etc.

Whether it's a client needing a responsive site, or a strategic email marketing campaign setup/tweaked, you've got to know your client needs and how you're going to tie in all systems to make it a success, you can't just guess, and hope it'll work. (That may work, but it's a huge risk...)

Bottom line, if you don't know 100% the web design or marketing service/systems you're selling and you haven't tested them successfully, then you're not in a position to sell yet, IMO. If you want to build a successful business that has longevity, then I would strongly recommend you are well prepared before you go in the trenches and start selling to local businesses.

I agree with almost everything you've said, regarding putting together a plan that's going to work for the client in order to create results, rather than chatting a load of rubbish about HTML5, PHP, SEO, SMS, and the TOOLS that you're gonna be using. The client is just interested in what those tools are gonna do for them...

The part that I don't agree with is what you said about knowing 100%, and having successfully tested all of your web design and marketing systems. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Whilst I agree that you shouldn't sell if you know nothing/very little about what you're selling... If you've done your study, and you come from a place of integrity, and you truly are putting the client first, then you will do your best to deliver on what you promised.

And if you are still starting out, and you don't know your trade 100%, then you'll make smaller promises that you can deliver on. And if you fail to deliver, then you should compensate the client accordingly, whether you give them a refund, or free products/services until you rectify your mistakes.

Learn by doing, do by selling.

If you don't have enough knowledge to make a 100% guarantee with a website or internet marketing service you must at least have one result you can achieve and deliver on. Always sell a result. If you can't, then find out who can and become a broker by becoming the middle man or the solution man (the guy that brings everything together). Also know thy numbers, this is the beginning and a goal in itself to any profitable business.

If you know little about the thing then get to learn it, apply it by yourself and remember there's always people who are already selling crap. So you are the only one limiting yourself.
