I will tell you I personally stopped using them about 3 years ago. Everyone with cel phones and unlimited calling there really is no need for it. I never noticed a decrease in call volume and I ended up saving a good chunk of change every month.

I have a website that sells nationally for a service. I am ranked 4th overall in sales. and that site has a "local" number. ( the first 2 spots by the way are by the company themselves ) So I really would not say that overall it has effected my sales at all.

    earman, thanks

savidge4, I understand, but sometimes it makes sense to test, depends on the industry.

What's interesting is that in numerous toll free tests I've performed is that 855 outperforms 800 AND 888 in nearly every instance.

The reason I think that is, is because some people aren't aware of 855, or 844 being toll free numbers. I know when I'm searching around for stuff, I'm more likely to call what I believe to be a local or direct line instead of an 800 number. I'm sure there's a lot of people out there like that too.

I believe 800 numbers themselves aren't critical to any marketing campaign. Instead, it is critical for them to have a vanity number that people can remember. You don't need a number people can remember unless you're doing a bunch of nationwide advertising and spend just as much money branding as you do advertising.

I'll use some toll free numbers, mostly 855 for tracking purposes for different campaigns I run. My preference is callfire.

      I've been using freedomvoice.com
It's $9.95 a month to start (300 minutes / 4.9 cents each additional minute) with a 30 day free trial.
I'm not too sure if it's still an option but I also got a free 1-888 virtual fax number too.

My only complaint is the way the calculate minutes used.
You will rack up minutes fast and spend a lot of money so that needs to be taken into consideration.

If you need to forward it to a cell phone, then use it.
If you need to forward it to a land line then it would be cheaper in the long run to just use your telephone company and get a business phone number.
Most potential customers probably won't give a rat's ass what phone number you use but if you insist, (like iAmNameless said) it's probably worth getting a 1-800-vanity phone number so people can remember it.

I like CallFire as well only because they give really good customer support. I haven't had a 1-800 in the past few weeks when I decided I didn't need it since I would have another friend take care of my calls. He opened up his own CallFire account.
