Cold calling to find new ideas?

Does anyone cold call or do surveys to find new ideas?

I briefly worked with a small telemarketing team that does this. Basically, they had two people calling to survey very targeted niches (in this case international conferences for C-level execs). Then they would tailor their conferences according to their surveys. They would change campaign maybe every 3-4 months.

Instead of building a business out of say, an idea that one has, they do:

Survey people in a specific niche.
Build a product around pain points.
Call the niche back and ask for their money

Anyone else use cold calling to setup new campaigns or find new products? Thoughts? Any good books on the subject?

They wouldn't call it cold calling. They would just call it surveying. It's one of the first steps some coaches use when designing a coaching program.
