How To Recover Banned FB Account

Hi all,

My FB account was just banned and upon requesting an appeal I just got back a generic answer about how my ads don't help users.

I don't really want to go down the road of having to create another account and run ads so I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and successfully recovered their account?

Thanks in advance,
Joshua

Thanks for the replies. I did a little digging and have found this thread helpful (so far this has been the only case I've found where an account was recovered).

    A little advice.

I have 3 personal accounts and all of them have my real friends with minimal activity in two of them. I did this because I was intending to use them for different things a while back but I just had them sitting around and when one got banned I went to the next.

I have a total of about 10 facebook accounts, 7 are random pics and flat out fake accounts. I keep them active by logging in once or twice a week and getting involved in a few groups adding the members as friends and making a quick post.

If you build up a few accounts and keep minimal activity on them they will allow you to have a peace of mind. Just remember to never connect none of the accounts with each other.

Also if one account gets banned leave that domain alone completely. If you wanna be smart about it always use subdomains when inside of facebook. Do this just in case they do ban you all you have to do is switch the subdomain and transfer the files over to the new one (it's a completely new domain then)... and change IP as well

Sounds like a lot of work to be able to run FB ads.

Hi all, wanted to update you all on my situation. I've sent in another appeal and explained in nice terms how a misunderstanding could have happened and what I think might have triggered the disabling of my account. I also detailed what I was doing and reassured them I was committed to adhering to FB rules.

I also came across someone named Justin Brooke on FB who is doing all of us in the same boat a huge favour by talking with FB representatives. Here's an excerpt of his initial conversation:

The lady I spoke with was audibly upset by my words and said it is her job to make sure this kind of stuff ISN'T happening. They aren't "out for blood" with direct response or VSL's. However, they are cracking down hard on things causing lots of user complaints.
She explained there are two departments.
Global marketing (FB ads educators) and policy (FB ads police). The policy department does the account terminations. Global marketing tries to avoid as well as prevent account terminations.
1.) She said if you feel that your account is wrongfully terminated or ads wrongfully disaaproved the best place to go is...
    https://www.facebook.com/business/resources
Replying to ad or account termination emails or contacting FB through the in-line termination message goes to the policy team and they aren't responsible for helping you get your account back up. They are responsible for stopping things that go against their policy and that's it.
You must get in touch with the global marketing team if you need help.
2.) All agencies/businesses need to be using business manager. You are allowed, and she recommended setting up new accounts for each client inside your business manager account. YOUR CLIENTS DO NOT NEED TO HAVE THEIR OWN BUSINESS MANAGER ACCOUNTS. YAY!!!!
She said it's much easier to just create a new account for them inside your business manager account. Then once you've created the new account add them to the account with whatever permissions make sense.
3.) She is connecting me to someone in their policy department to learn more about what causes terminations and disapproval. That's happening next week, I'll have more to report then.
He has since followed up with another post after his call with Brian Hopkins, head of the ads integrity team (basically policy makers). Here's an excerpt of his post:

    1.) Their Agenda
They strongly believe that advertising can improve the Facebook user experience. That is the over arching mission they have set out to prove as well as enforce.
He specifically said multiple times that they have no issue with direct response or affiliates. Only an issue of proving that advertising can and should improve the Facebook user experience.
So when creating your campaigns think of Brian and ask yourself "Would Brian think this campaign improves the FB user experience or detracts from it?"
2.) Trust is #1 for policy team
His exact words were "We have a zero tolerance policy for advertisers who break the trust relationship between FB and it's users."
Examples he gave were ads that use images that have nothing to do with the offer or ad copy. Ads that use fear or hype. Landing pages that don't disclose the business model. Videos with no player controls and force the user to wait.
3.) FB ads for affiliate marketers
He mentioned multiple times that they have no issue with affiliate marketers. The issue they have is when affiliates use misleading ads, hypey copy, irrelevant images, fake images, low quality images, and landing pages that don't disclose their business model or trick the user.
He even said that they believe FB ads are one of the strongest tools for affiliate marketers and they care a lot about keeping it that way.
4.) How they handle user complaints
He said that when a user X's out your ads or requests to hide them they use that as a signal to investigate your account.
If they get complaints but your ads aren't misleading and your landing pages clearly disclose your business model and you're not doing anything to trick/mislead/deceive/frustrate the user then you're fine.
However, he also made it sound like his team rarely sees complaints on campaigns that are trustworthy and transparent.
    5.) Vague acct termination notices
They are working on a better system. However, he explained that from their side there are soooo many different scenarios. Tens of thousands. That they just don't have the resources to give an accurate detailed reasoning for every termination.
He said acct terminations are usually a result of something you are doing is breaking the trust relationship and in their eyes that's not a business model issue it's an ethics issue.
    6.) Moderating comments
It is ok to remove nasty or spammy comments. However, deleting all negative responses is frowned upon. It looks like you are hiding something or trying to deceive the users.
    7.) VSL'S and squeeze pages
They are ok with list building and sales videos. They are not ok with list building pages that do not clearly identify the business and it's model.
Same with VSL'S that make it hard to immediately identify the business name and model.
When I explained what a VSL was (page with just a video, autoplay, no player controls and order button hidden) he said all of that breaks the user trust relationship.
Hope that helps you all. Search up his name and follow his post threads for updated info on the situation. That's what I did.

I think it would be better for you to create a separate thread to ask your question since it's not related to banned FB accounts.

Wow that's some excellent insight there mate, much appreciated for the above. I had a hunch that the Facebook ad review teams is exactly like the Adwords PPC team and just wants to work with professional and trustworthy marketers that simply adhere to their policies and work with them to enhance the user experience for their members (that means agencies AND affiliates, as they don't hate affiliates). You have just confirmed it for me and hopefully many others as well

Yeah, Justin Brooke has really done many of us a huge favour by sharing the information and going great lengths to get in touch with FB to clarify some of these areas.

I'm very much looking forward to his follow up call that will be covering training and how to recover a banned account.

    That's great information joshiaw.
I've had my problems with FB as well. Got my account banned and I was clueless and just couldn't do much other a couple of mails to them.
Now this provides a good insight into their functionality and overall approach. It will help us understand their policies better now. Keep us updated though.

Hi everyone, just an update on the situation. I actually managed to talk to someone from FB by applying for the FB Go program. At first they were enthusiastic about working with me till they found out my ad account was flagged. I then explained how I was puzzled how that happened as well and what I had done since to rectify the issue.

The support person was quite understanding and followed up the case for me. I was told the problem came from one of the affiliate offers I was promoting. After a warning not to do it again, I was assured that their technical team would help to reinstate my account. My hopes were dashed however because I was then told that they couldn't reactivate my account. They couldn't really explain why except that the appeal was rejected and while the support person was sympathetic to my problem there was apparently nothing else that could be done.

Is that the end of the story? Who knows. I'm still waiting on any updates from Justin regarding the matter. Funny story is that his account was also shut down in the middle of all this back and forth between FB. It took a lot of string pulling behind the scenes including a reference from Google before he got his account back.

While I have little hopes that my account will be recovered, I'm also looking at other sources of traffic. For one, there are a few reputable 3rd party options out there that offer advertisement and retargeting including FB.

Why didn't they ban your ads instead of your whole account?

I find no reason to ban a whole account just for an ad...

Maybe you've done something else that violated their terms and
    resulted in your account termination?

Not really sure. The original flag message was for suspicious activity which I explained to the rep that it could have been that I was travelling and logging in from a different location might have triggered it.

It could also have been that one of my ads was not approved twice in a row (although it has been that has happened before and I just adjusted the ad and it was fine).

The thing is the only verbal reason given by the rep was concerning this one ad I had running (which was doing well and good engagement too). So as puzzled and frustrated as I am, that's all I have to go on.

Still, I understand the reasoning behind the shoot first ask questions later mentality they may have. I just want to know what I can do to rectify whatever mistake I have made in their eyes and get back into their good graces. Unfortunately, that chance is hard to come by especially since there is doesn't even seem to be a formal route to take in processing an appeal.
