My best and most efficient tool - by a countrymile - is my head.

I figured that because everyone has access to these keyword tools, I won't get a competitive edge by using the very same software as everyone else. You should do the same.

So when you are looking for keywords, use your brain and think "outside the box". Reverse engineer what others are doing, look at their sites, their USPs, what language are they using. Flip through magazines, watch TV ads and use a dictionary/thesaurus to come up with new combinations of what a customer might search for on Google to buy the product you are promoting. You can also start typing anything into Google and see what keywords get "auto-filled" or suggested for you (the user/customer) right away, which is another great way to find what a customer might type into the search bar.

Sure, using tools and keyword software is a good starting point ... but if you want to win at this game and get ahead, be smarter than everyone else and rely on your head to do the nitty-gritty keyword research and finetune your keyword list.

Everyone relies mostly on tools and software only when building their PPC campaigns ... I say use these tools and software to build a basic foundation, and then use your brain to get ahead and gain that winning "competitive advantage" in the PPC game. At least that's what I do when setting up any new PPC campaign.

    Hope that helps

Most and if not all conceivable profitable niche have at least 10 websites ranking well i.e. top ten in Google.
Putting those sites in SEMRush will give you a list of all the keywords they rank for and all the related keywords including search volume.

After one single sitting, you will have 1,000 of keywords with their search volumes.

But the secret sauce in SEMrush is to see historical ads that have appeared in Google for said keyword.

For example, you have a website example.com that has appeared in Google consistently for the last 3 months for a given keyword. It is safe to assume that if a website is appearing in Google (paid) for a given keyword it must convert, that keyword surely has to be a winner.

Thus, spending some time on SEMRush going through competitors that are in Google Adwords and mining the keywords that have performed are the most logical set of keywords to attempt to rank for.

The tools we use that we find the most productive are SEMrush to get an idea of what the competitors are targeting as well as adwords keyword planner to give as an idea of what would be a good monthly budget to fit the client, the monthy budget in keyword planner is based off of user searching and googles suggested first page bid.

Definitely do what others mentioned above and use your head. Think of your main keyword and then what is related. Look at Google suggest and then work from there. Google keyword planner or whatever is the only keyword tool I'd use. The others might be good for getting ideas/variations, but any "data" they provided regarding searches etc is not to be trusted.

Generally speaking simply my head combined with a lot of manual research such as reverse engineering competitor websites, reading articles on the products in the market I'm in, listening to radio ads and watching commercials. I usually tend to stay away from tools as everyone generally has access to them, which means you won't get much of a competitive advantage.

At least that's how I'd like to get ahead in the game

Apart from keyword research tools, you should also consider Google suggestions. The long tail keywords you see when you type something in google search bar are very good keywords to be used. I have tried this technique and it worked for me
