What's the average ctr for banner ads? From what I've read it's anywhere between .1-.2 percent. Going from those figures, it seems like it would be really hard to get a campaign to be profitable. Anyone have some tips that have used banner ads in the past?

Yeh that sounds about right (retargeting is generally a little higher at around 0.2%-0.3%) but remember the inventory for banner ads is a load higher than search. So the volume will be there.

I would be more concerned by the fact that banner ads display in a 'contextual' environment.. where as search is based on intent and people having a problem they need solved. Its a different medium good for different things.

There are so many factors that come into play with that, it's really hard to tell. A good banner that stands out in the right location can generate allot more than 0.1 - 0.3%..I've had banner ads that get more along the 5% range.

Obviously, it depends on many factors. Most importantly on these two: 1) The audience those ads are shown to (higher CTR if it's relevant); 2) The placement of the ads.

0.1% - 0.4% is about right. Anything over 1% is what I would call a really high CTR. Anything over 2% is what I would call suspiciously high - check if those aren't accidental clicks if you pay per click.

Most of the time I use banner ads for remarketing. Usually we start with a general ad to get things flowing and it also falls in that percentage. As you optimize you'll see what works and what doesn't. Get emotional with the ads and try pushing different promotions. See how that goes.
